Product Description

This rugged, all-weather collar combines a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and VHF antenna into an all-in-one transmitter that works with the Astro® 320 and Astro® 220 to safeguard against your dog getting lost. Astro DC 40 sports a durable 1" orange polyurethane collar that fits most e-collar receivers — eliminating the need to put two separate collars on a dog. Plus, Collar Lock uses a 4-digit PIN number that helps prevent others from seeing your dog’s whereabouts.

Attach Collar and Go

When teamed up with the Astro 320 and 220, this system will have you hunting in no time. The DC 40, in combination with the Astro 320 and 220 pinpoints your dog’s position every 5 seconds. An innovative charging connection with a flashing LED-charging indicator lets you know when the battery is ready to go. You can extend the battery life of the DC 40 by changing the position transmit rate from 5 to 10, 30, or 120 seconds, enabling the DC 40 to work from 17-48 hours in the field on one charge. You will know if your dog is pointing, sitting, moving or treeing. Where your dog is. Where it’s been. How fast it’s moving and how far it’s gone.

No more wondering where my dogs have ran to while chasing rabbits.
Anyway, for anyone whose dog has a tendency to run off, getting one of these tracking collars is probably the best investment you can make!

We don't hunt, which is what these collars are made for, but we have four big dogs and like to do long forest hikes with them off lead. They're great dogs and stay by our sides most of the time, but once in a while, they get distracted and disappear into the undergrowth to check out a stream. They are well trained and don't chase wildlife and normally are perfect hikers, but they're retrievers and sometimes they can't resist the siren call of a stream. The oldest one has twice gone down steep slopes she wasn't able to get her old hips back up again. She's strong as on ox on a flat trail and can go downhill with the best of them, but she's mostly a front paw drive dog now. The first time she disappeared, one of our other dogs showed us where she went to- we couldn't find her on our own. The second time, we got a glimpse of her down the hill and were able to find her ourselves. With these collars, we won't ever be trying to figure out where Kelty decided to check out the stream and hope for a glimpse of her or wait for the other dogs to to take us to her.
The collars aren't cheap, but considering what it costs to keep a dog, it's a good investment. So far they have worked fantastic and we've had fun keeping track of how much further the young dogs walk up and down the trail around us. The collars are waterproof, and even after a long beach romp, there's no leakage. I would imagine they are great for hunters, but they're also good if you have a dog who mistakes itself for Magellan or other any other explorer.

I previously had two dc 30 collars and they worked fine but could not find any more so I ordered the new dc 40 and I have had no problems with it. It works just as well as the dc 30 collars. The only difference is the collar is orange and made of rubber and the old ones are made of nylon. Also the charger is a bit different. I'm not sure which is best both have good points. The nylon seems to be a tougher material where as the rubber one is more flexible and the hunter orange is very easy to see in the woods. I will buy another one when the need arrives. Update: I have had this collar for a year now and have had no problems with it. I hunt a lot and use these collars on every dog. I have 3 dogs and getting another in 2 months. I will be ordering another of these collars since they have proven to be reliable. Also the rubber ones are better since the nylons ones are starting to come apart at the ends. If you have any doubts about this product because of the few bad reviews just notice that they are not amazon verified!

Couldn't ask for a better system. I have used the DC-40 every day since I got it and haven't had a single problem. I'm constantly amazed at how well it works. All my hunting friends want one now. I got an extra collar when I ordered mine because when I go hunting with a friend they are usually the one that can't find their dog or catch it when we do find it. I let a friend borrow it Saturday and it saved the day. The dog we put it on took off over 3 miles through thick woods that had no roads or trails. We were able to go straight to the dog. Never lost signal with my extented range antenna.

I have the Astro 220 and 3 DC-30 collars. I bought the first 2 collars March, 2010 and so they have been working 24/7/365 for almost 4 years now. A year later I bought a 3rd DC-30 ! Now when I got a new dog and needed another collar, the DC-30 has been replaced by the DC-40.

I can't give it 5 stars yet because it is so new to me that it feels oddball and it didn't come with any owner's manual. It works slightly differently than the DC-30. The connection for the charger is quite different and I don't know yet if it will stand up like those on t he DC-30.

One of the BEST assets to the DC-40 is the collar. The collar is changeable and comes in multiple colors. Even MORE important is the fact that the collar is long enough for my dogs that are livestock guardians and have much thicker necks. I had to attach a standard dog collar to all the DC-30's before they would fit my dogs. The DC-40 fits out of the box.

IN RESPONSE TO THE "MOST HELPFUL" 1-STAR REPORT I WISH TO COMMENT. When I got my last DC-30 in 2011, the battery didn't function right. It didn't hold a charge. So I called Garmin, and they IMMEDIATELY sent me a NEW battery - no question, no return bad battery... just EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE.

The battery unit on the DC-40 is made for EASY replacement if needed. I am VERY pleased with the functionality of the Astro canine tracking gps's. It gives direction and distance, and while Garmin does offer mapping and ariel photography, if you already have a mapping program that can download data from garmin GPS's, then you can use THAT mapping software to track your dog. It's also compatible with Google Earth, which I think is another asset. I highly recommend this to farmers with livestock guardian dogs as well as people who SHOW dogs, so they don't lose their dog. It was painful to see a family lose their #1 BOB dog at an airport, and I don't think they ever got the dog back. This could have saved them that pain.
