Product Description

Display Size: 8.4 inches | Edition: Preloaded Coastal Maps

This preloaded, offshore chartplotter combines the power of networking with brilliant color and slim-line design. The GPSMAP 4208 has preloaded BlueChart® g2 maps of the U.S. coast and displays them on an 8.4” (21.34 cm) VGA display with video-quality resolution. By connecting to the Garmin Marine Network, you can add sonar, radar and weather. For even more enhanced features, you can add the optional Bluechart® g2 Vision® card (sold separately).

View Detailed Graphics and Video

The 4208 features highly-detailed BlueChart g2 marine cartography of the coastal U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii and the Bahamas. This data provides detailed coastlines, shaded depth contours, navaids, port plans, wrecks, restricted areas and tide and current information. For other areas, the 4208 has a worldwide basemap with high-quality satellite images in place of more traditional maps. With the SD™ card slot, you can add additional maps without having to connect to a computer.

The 4208’s high-speed processor draws maps quickly, and its simple intuitive interface makes navigating easy. To keep tabs on your engine room or other area of your boat, you also can connect a live video feed with the 4208’s video input and output options.

Add Extras with BlueChart g2 Vision

With the optional BlueChart g2 Vision SD card, you can add a whole new dimension of exceptional features to your chartplotter.

  • MarinerEye view and FishEye view provide you a 3-D

perspective of map information, both above and below the waterline.
  • High-resolution satellite images and aerial photographs help you orient yourself in unfamiliar areas.
  • Auto guidance technology searches through all relevant charts to create a route you can actually follow — one that avoids obstacles, shallow water, buoys and other obstructions.

Connect to the Garmin Marine Network

The 4208 connects easily to the high-speed Garmin Marine Network, so you can interface with additional MFDs and add remote sensors. Once

connected, you can share information between the 4208 and other chartplotters on your boat. You also can add high-powered radar, sonar and XM satellite weather and radio to your system.

We purchased this unit in July and used it full time while cruising in Mexico. In December it started having problems with the screen showing only our boat and track. No chart. We had a friend bring down a replacement display unit which Garmin was good about providing. Now we have our old problem plus a new one. The Garmin splash screen would freeze and not start. No worries Garmin to the rescue. So we thought, after a month we received the new SD card as suggested by tech support. We just put the card in and now the unit is stuck on the Garmin logo without the ability to press the special buttons Garmin had us do in the past to bring up the charts. Perhaps it would make a nice dinghy anchor. We are thankful it is under warranty but wasting months in an anchorage to find the fix is not what we expected when we bought this unit. Please note we did not purchase this from Amazon but a well known marine store.

Update, Garmin has provided customer service above all others. They have gone over and beyond what one could expect to insure we have a working unit onboard. I have heard from friends with similar issues with other companies and those companies did not come close to the service we received. Part of our problem was that we are traveling in Mexico. Garmin shipped to Mexico for us and were there with a quick response every step of the way. Thank you for your great service Garmin. Love the working unit. It is top notch.

This GPS is excellent - Definately the best GPS on the market. Deciding on a sounder unit and accessories is a little complicated. I'm very happy with the purchase even with the high price. I wish Garmin had better depth-sounding technology - the regular unit works well but is not as good as the Lowrance HDS. And Lowrance now has side-scan sonar. When buying this, I considered Garmin, Lowrance, and Humminbird. Hummingbird was first to market with side-scan, but their units felt cheaply made to me, and their GPS was not nearly as good as Garmin. Lowrance is decent, but their GPS lacks many features of the Garmin and their UI is not intuitive at all. I decided the GPS features and intuitive UI in the Garmin were worth not having the cool high def and side-scan sonar capabilities. Maybe one day they'll release a competitive depth sounding module which I would gladly purchase, but their current sounder does work and provides decent visibility up to the 500' depths I've fished.

Bought mine 8 years ago and it still works great! About 2 years ago I noticed some paint blistering where the back case meets the faceplate. I galled garmin to ask if they sold touch up paint. I was told that they didn't but that if I sent it two them they would replace the back case with a new one for free. I got it back from Garmin about two weeks after I sent it to them. It had a new case, was bech tested for any problems, and had a new software update installed. They provided outstanding product service and warrantee. I understand that this item has been discontinued by Garmin, but there are still some new ones for sale, and at the right price would be well worth it. They are very durable, and Garmin maintains enough parts to support the product for at least 5 years.
