Amazon.com Product Description

Turn your BlackBerry into a world-class navigator with a Garmin Mobile subscription and the GPS 20SM smart mount--a wireless package that combines a high-sensitivity GPS receiver, a Bluetooth hands-free kit, an adjustable phone cradle, and a 12-volt phone charger all in one. It's easy to get started: simply purchase a subscription through the Garmin Mobile Buyer's Guide, then activate and install the Garmin Mobile software on your BlackBerry. Finally, mount your BlackBerry in the mobile phone cradle and start navigating. Once the package is installed, you'll have access to detailed directions, maps, and points of interest, including voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions with audible street names. The intuitive user interface, moving maps, and off-route recalculation, meanwhile, are must-haves for people who get lost easily.

The phone cradle easily adjusts to fit your BlackBerry device and moves effortlessly from vehicle to vehicle, so you can bring it along during business trips or vacations. You can also talk safely on your BlackBerry thanks to the smart mount's built-in Bluetooth wireless technology, speaker, and microphone. Want to look up and dial numbers from your address book or Garmin Mobile's extensive point-of-interest database? Not a problem. Just look up and call the number, order food for pickup or make the reservation, and the BlackBerry will guide you there with easy-to-understand directions.

The Garmin Mobile subscription even gives you access to free wireless data services, with dynamic content for routing around traffic tie-ups, viewing the local weather, and finding the least expensive gas prices. Other details include more than 1,000 waypoints, several route choices (fastest time, shortest distance, etc.), and route avoidance (to elude busy highways, tolls, and more). The GPS 20SM smart mount measures 2.7 by 4.2 by 2.31 inches (W x H x D), weighs 2.2 ounces, and is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box

Product Description

Garmin International is pleased to announce that Garmin Mobile - an application that delivers maps, directions, and turn-by-turn navigation-will be available on select BlackBerry devices. Garmin Mobile is the first off-board cellular phone navigation system that visually depicts and constantly updates the user's position on a detailed moving map. Since this is an off-board solution, mapping data and points-of-interest are stored on Garmin's servers, not on the BlackBerry device itself. Therefore, customers have access to the most up-to-date mapping and POI information available. In order to utilize Garmin Mobile, the BlackBerry device must have a data plan for network access.

With Garmin Mobile, customers will receive voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions so they can easily navigate to a specific street address or points of interest (POI) - places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The text-to-speech functionality allows the unit to audibly announce the name of streets and POIs, letting drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. If users stray off course, Garmin Mobile will automatically calculate the quickest way to get back on track. Map data is provided by NAVTEQ - a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

BlackBerry customers will also have access to real-time traffic, fuel, hotel and weather information. The real-time traffic service identifies accidents, road construction, or other incidents affecting traffic, and routes users around the congestion. The fuel feature displays helpful fuel information such as the filling station's name, fuel price, type of fuel, and distance to the station (U.S. only). View current hotel rates, ratings and availability information. Real-time weather information lets users see weather at their current location or anywhere in North America.

In order to access the navigation benefits of Garmin Mobile through a BlackBerry, customers

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for the frequent traveler, September 23, 2007
This review is from: Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry with GPS 20SM - GPS kit (Electronics)
Using mine since Feb '07, first with a BlackBerry 7100, then with the faster 8100 Pearl. Absolutely fabulous. One particularly useful feature when in other (boroughs or) cities is the finder, which provides all locations of a post office, particular chain, bank branch etc. starting with the nearest, as well as standalone, specific stores, restaurants etc. No unnecessary bells and whistles, its a grown-up GPS in a tiny package. In a pinch, I have even used in on the motorcycle -- in a plastic bag taped to the tank bag. Performed as well as my $900 Tom-Tom Rider (although the BlackBerry will run out of juice quickly unless connected to the car or cycle electrical system).

I bought this for my Blackberry Curve becase the built in GPS is garbage. This acquires satelite very fast, is very accurate so far. Has a cord to plug in your phone for charging. Hands free speaker phone works well. I was looking at buying a seperate GPS Navigator, but those that had bluetooth are close to $200. For the price of this you get bluetooth speaker phone, accurate GPS, turn by turn....the software subscription that comes with this is $100 alone if you bought it from Garmin for your blackberry. I saw this on wal-mart for about $180. It truely is worth the money.

I had high expectations for anything with the Garmin name on it, but I was disappointed.

- The suction device is very poor and falls off the windshield after a few miles.

- The holder takes two hands to operate and is very awkward to use. Makes taking the blackberry out of the holder or putting it in a real struggle.

- I did not buy the charger cable, because I assumed it would a standard USB-type cable - it does not.

- The Bluetooth device has no (or very poor) echo cancelling, so the person on the other end of your call hears their own voice transmitted back to them at a slight delay, making conversations nearly impossible. The work-around is to turn the volume way down - but then you can't hear well.

- All in all I think this was a very poor purchase decision.
