Garmin motorcycle mount,

This review is from: Garmin Motorcycle Mount for StreetPilot 2610 and 2620 (010-10495-00) (Electronics)
I purchased this mounting kit to quickly attach my gps to my Harley Davidson for travel. The kit is misleading as a "mounting kit". It does hold the unit somewhat securely, although i have added extra protection to prevent detachment from the bracket during travel. It does not have the hardware needed to attach to the handle bars. Therefore additional products must be purchased. What is called a "ram kit" which is sold at other vendors online is required. costs are about $35 to $50 bucks. I felt deceived when i purchased it as a "mounting kit" and was unable to initially mount it to my bike.

This is really not a mounting kit so much as it is a cradle for the 2610. I went crazy trying to find a ram kit, so I could actually mount this thing on my motorcycle. The Garmin instructions aren't helpful in this regard but I finally found a 2.5" round plate with a 1" ball attached which would fit the Garmin backing plate. The popular diamond plate won't fit. I actually had to get hold of a schematic of the part to match it up. Problem solved. But this whole process should have been more customer friendly. The 2610 is a great product, but if you're not a techie, you might want to consider buying some other mount package specific to the 2610.

This is just a mounting kit... It needs a 3rd party "cell phone" mount to actually attach to your motorcycle. Very disappointed that I have to order something *else* in addition to this "kit"After getting a RAM mount (from somewhere else, I don't think Amazon sells them), this did mount easily and quickly to my bike, just be aware, that you need a RAM mount in addition to this kit, which is really just a connection from a RAM mount to the garmin device

The price was okay but the unit was not very good from a mounting standpoint. I had to replace it with a RAM unit. I cannot recommed this product.

I like the security of the Garmin locking cradle to secure my GPS if I leave the bike unattended for a short while. This unit matches up to a Ram mount flange adapter for easy mounting. Ram Mount mounting parts are NOT included. The power cable comes with a inline fuse and long lead to go back to the battery or other power source. There is also a wired standard jack for a mono earplug. The cradle locking screw has has a special screw driver to attach the GPS. This must be kept handy to the bike for convienence to install or remove the GPS. The end on the power cable also has a plastic cover that must be kept handy to cover the power connections when not hooked to the GPS. This is the second Garmin cradle I own (I have 2 motorcycles, one for each) for easy switching of my Garmin GPS between bikes. I have used one of these for 3 years and a lot on miles, never had a problem with the GPS coming loose while riding, but I have a friend whom it happened to on his. He added extra security using a fishing line leader to attach the GPS to the mount for the 'just in case'.

Note that this item also fits the Garmin 2720, 2730 & newer StreetPilots. Amazon sells the RAM mount that is needed with this item to install on up to 1" diameter motorcycle handlebars, it includes stainless steel hardware >> RAM Mount Steel U-Bolt Motorcycle Mount with Plate (through MountGuys). It has a 2 hole diamond plate that fits perfectly the 4 hole AMPS pattern Garmin mounting bracket which you get with the Garmin 010-10495-00 package listed here for a few dollars more than the wiring alone. The combination of the Garmin bracket & RAM mount is the best. A similar Ram mount with a 4 hole pattern plate, RAM-B-149-347 is available from GPSCity. The 4 hole AMPS plate alone with 1" ball is part# RAM-B-347 & is available from RAM with a multitude of mounting options from the brake & clutch lever bolts to the handlebar clamp bolts.

The only mount I'll use on my bike for my 2610 or any of the 27XX and 28XX series GPS. You could get a TourTech for ocvr a hundred and no DC Cable and be more secure or for less than $40 you get the cable and nearly as secure a mount. You choice. I made mine.Garmin Motorcycle Mount for StreetPilot 2610 and 2620 (010-10495-00)

This mount is a very secure way to afix the GPS to the motorcycle. You do need another mounting device to secure it to the handlebar. I used a RAM mount. Item shipped quickly and transaction was good all the way through.

I bought mine from Aerostitch, a few weeks before I left for Alaska this past summer (2007). I expected a "motorcycle mount" kit, but what I received is a cheezy plastic bracket and a wiring harness. Lucklily, I'd bought a general purpose electronics bracket earlier, so I mounted this kit on that mount. What holds the GPS (mine is a 2610) in place is a #6 screw and a slotted piece that fits into a groove behind the GPS's base. This is far from secure and if you're only going to ride smooth pavement it is probably good enough. I was going to Alaska. About 200 miles into Saskatchewan, I felt a slight bump on my left leg and looked down just in time to see my 2610 pop loose from the wiring connector and drop to the highway. The mounting groove on the GPS unit had snapped off and nothing else held the 2610 on the bike. An hour of searching and I found the GPS, badly beat up but, amazingly, still functional. For the last 20,000 miles, duct tape has held my GPS on the bracket without fail (and without class, I also have to admit). I'd go another way, if you find an alternative. This unit is necessary for the wiring harness and connector, but worthless as a "mounting" device.

This holds the Garmin GPS very securely, and has the required power & audio connections. It uses a security screw to secure the GPS into cradle of the mount. This will slow down someone trying to remove it, unless your using ram type mounts. Some have complained that the production description is not complete because you do need a actual mount to attach to the bike. This mount will attach to that mount. I knew this when buying so was not surprised. For the money, it does what intended. |
