The map updates have many bad addresses for businesses and points of interest. The original maps that came with my Garmin had the correct addresses, but the update seems to have put many points of interest at incorrect locations.
Another thing to be aware of is that Garmin will not transfer the "lifetime" updates to a replacement unit. My GPS was stolen about a month after I purchased the update package and Garmin customer support's answer was too bad, buy another. A few key strokes in their database and I would still be a loyal Garmin customer, but their products just aren't that amazing on their own.

Beware - once you buy and install this product on a GPS, you can never move it to another GPS. Garmin's policy is you can never move a map! Certainly does nothing to drive brand loyalty.

After a trip to Spain, in which the 2007 Garmin European maps led me astray on several occasions, I decided to purchase the 2009 European Map update for a trip to Italy.
I found the upgrade to be mediocre. The newer maps offered only a slight improvement over the older maps. In several locations, such as Matera, the GPS directed us to take streets designated for pedestrians only. On other occasions, the GPS wanted instructed us to turn onto tiny roads as opposed to a main road (which was the road the GPS wanted us to turn down). In the winding roads of the Amalfi coast, the GPS seemed to have a difficult time understanding our altitude. The GPS seemed to think we were either on a higher or lower road than we actually were on. This led to much confusion and we eventually just ignored the GPS. Lastly, many cities in Italy have restricted driving zones, on which only residents can freely drive (tickets mailed to foreigners several months after a trip). The GPS did not warn us before we entered these restricted zones. I admit that without the GPS, I would never have been able to find my way in Italy. However, I these maps were more accurate and detailed.
