Full Featured Training Watch for Multisport Athletes

  • Tracks distance, pace and heart rate¹
  • Calculates recovery time and VO2 max estimate (when used with a heart rate monitor¹)
  • HRM-Run™ monitor¹ adds data for cadence, ground contact time and vertical oscillation
  • Connected features², including uploads to Garmin Connect™ and BaseCamp™ for live tracking and sharing
  • High-sensitivity GPS positioning, 3-axis compass with altimeter and barometer

Combining the best features of our fitness and outdoor watches, the fēnix 2 is the ideal multisport athlete’s training partner. Whether running, climbing, riding, hiking, paddling, skiing or swimming, the fēnix 2 lets you easily switch between feature sets for easier access to the information you need. Switch from advanced fitness training features like VO2 max, Virtual Partner® and recovery advisor to high-sensitivity GPS tracking features like 3-axis compass and TracBack®. And with Smart Notification you can stay in touch, even while you’re out testing your mettle.

Advanced Fitness Metrics

fēnix 2 is packed with training features to tell you about your form and fitness. The first is the VO2 max estimator. When used with a heart rate monitor¹, fēnix 2 crunches data, including your running speed, beats per minute and heart rate variability to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute. Track changes to your VO2 max to see your fitness gains and to compare with your peers. Other fitness metrics include recovery advisor with a recovery timer and recovery check, plus a Race Predictor, which estimates your ideal finish time based on your current VO2 max number.

Running Dynamics Features

fēnix 2 incorporates sophisticated Garmin running watch feedback on your running form by reporting multiple metrics. When used with the HRM-Run monitor¹, fēnix 2 reports your cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time. These metrics are called running dynamics, and they effect your running economy.

Swim Profile and Ski-Board Mode

The fēnix 2 isn’t just for outdoor fitness; special feature sets help swim training and skiing too. Borrowing from the Garmin Swim™, fēnix 2 tracks your distance, pace, stroke count and more. You just tell fēnix 2 the size of the pool you’re swimming in and begin your workout. Ski-Board mode puts speed, distance, vertical drop and an automatic run counter (with Auto Pause for the lift line) and more at your fingertips. You can even use your fēnix 2 as a glove-friendly remote, via ANT+™, for the VIRB™ and VIRB Elite action cameras.

Navigate Your Way

No other navigator GPS plus ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) wristwatch offers you the combined training functions and our leading GPS technology. fēnix 2 provides comprehensive navigation and tracking functionalities as well as trip information to guide you on and off the beaten track. Its built-in sensors provide information on heading, elevation and weather changes. It’s built to endure the toughest outdoor conditions — and also makes a stylish day-to-day timepiece.

It records a track log creating a GPS “bread crumb trail” as you move. It also allows you to mark waypoints, such as a start/finish line, course check point, or a campsite, vehicle or other point of interest. With fēnix 2, you can create and follow routes, mark up to 1,000 waypoints and store up to 10,000 track points.

Plan trips and share adventures with friends and family using BaseCamp. fēnix is equipped with both ANT+ and Bluetooth® capabilities to wirelessly share tracks, waypoints, routes and geocaches with other compatible Garmin devices or smartphones.

Altimeter, Barometer and Compass

fēnix 2 is equipped with ABC sensors to provide relevant real-time information. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent, while the barometer can be used to predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure. The 3-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing whether you’re moving or not.

fēnix 2 auto-calibrates its ABC sensors using its GPS receiver and also auto sets the time based on location. For an extremely accurate temperature reading, pair it with our tempe™ external temperature sensor.

Built to Endure the Roughest Conditions

fēnix 2 combines a strong housing to survive shocks with a curved mineral glass lens to resist scratching. It boasts a large LCD display with a red LED backlight and a robust polyurethane wristband. An alternate fabric wrist strap (with hook-and-loop fastener) is also included with your fēnix 2 to accommodate all wrist sizes and so you can strap it on top of a heavy jacket. fēnix 2 is water rated to 5 ATM (50 meters) and has a battery life of up to 50 hours in GPS mode (depending on settings) and up to 5 weeks in watch mode. Basic watch functions include alarms, tones, vibration alerts, timer, stopwatch and world clock with the ability to display several times zones at once.

Stay Connected

Smart Notification lets you receive emails, texts and alerts right on your watch, even if you're on the trail. fēnix 2 receives the wireless signal from your iPhone® 4s or later, let’s you know you have a message, and displays the full text on its own screen whenever you’re ready to read it.

I don't write reviews often, but there was so much information and updates surrounding this watch, I decided with the recent updates I should throw my two cents in, since everyone else's helped me decide myself.
I bought this just a few weeks ago after reading the online reviews of the previous FENIX, comparison with the TACTIX and D2 Flight Versions and the DCrainmaker reviews - (the best overall comparisons for every major Alt / Baro / Compass (ABC) / GPS watches - even within the same brand (GARMIN), however just a bit outdated now as they were based on the Beta model, now much improved with software updates).
I have not extensively tested the issues others have reported regarding the loss of tracking, inaccurate GPS tracks, the battery dying or timer / distance reseting after 2-3 hours. Those are serious issues for the dedicated distance athlete - I will test mine during normal use with the features running over the next couple of days to see if I have the same problems.

***12 MAY 2014 Update***: Ran the GPS all day, to include various times of indoor / lost signal and without the HRM on. I pressed random lap times and navigated through a few menus, leaving it going until the battery died (under 2% - the watch shut off automatically) at 11 hours and 40 minutes. I would expect the HRM use in conjunction with to decrease that a bit more and there was many times I was indoors, however the watch should have been searching for satellites still using extensive battery life. I estimated 12-15 hours (NORMAL GPS Mode, Hiking Activity) but it did fall a bit short. Not bad, with still an option for "Ultra Trac" GPS mode to significantly increase the battery life.

Garmin has taken a good outdoors navigation watch (the original Fenix) and added some great fitness tracking features. Unfortunately the initial firmware releases were very buggy and as of April 2014 they're still rolling out updates at a furious pace. You might want to wait another month or two to see whether the remaining bugs have been ironed out. This is an ever-shifting list, but here are a few of the current issues:

- Lots of reported problems with the accuracy of recorded tracks and activity recording freezing after a couple of hours. (Some of these issues may have been fixed in firmware update 2.60).

- Lots of issues with Bluetooth pairing to iOS devices. And Bluetooth pairing doesn't work at all with Android devices.

- There's an "UltraTrac" GPS recording mode which provides 50 hours of battery life (instead of 12-15 hours or so), but it disregards all external sensors in that mode. So you can't use the HRM, cycling cadence sensor, external temperature gauge, etc.

- The user manual is incomplete. For example, you won't find instructions on how to start or stop GPS navigation when you're in the middle of recording some other activity. There's a way to do it, but it's not documented.

For more up-to-date information have a look at and scroll down to the comments on the review page for the Fenix 2. Or go to and look at the posts under "Running & Fitness".

Also, Garmin customer support has been overwhelmed. TAT for email queries is between 4 days and never. Usually it's a stock response that advises you to install the latest firmware and reset the unit. No-one from the Fenix team ever seems to look at user posts on

This amazing device has features for any sport imaginable, & I'm glad I have it. However, the 910xt is honed and perfected for triathlons and is more usable in that arena.

PROS: It does everything the 910xt does. No heavier than my old 310xt.
Easier and faster to send workouts to Garmin Connect.
You can wear it all day as a watch. GPS turns off when you stop an activity.
It has genuinely useful Recovery and VOmax features.
It has fascinating stride metrics on the run. I think I run faster by considering stride length, etc. Needs the new HRM-run strap.
It can navigate the wilderness and find geocaches.
You can download local maps to it! ( hard to read ).
It is an ABC watch- Altimeter Barometer Compass.
It is a useful alarm clock and alternate Time Zone watch. Hard to use as a stopwatch, so far.

CONS: It is hard for me to read on the go. If you configure the data pages to large numbers, it won't auto-page so you can see more.
The Bluetooth connectivity is of limited practical use. Using Bluetooth turns off ANT+, so don't switch for this feature.
No quick-disconnect (QD) mount yet.
It effectively has a smaller screen than 910xt, and feels bigger on the wrist. It would be very tall with a QD.
Effective race battery life is maybe 15 hours. That's less than the 310xt and 910xt. So run a faster Ironman.

Conclusion, I like it- you ought to get 'cha one ! (unless all you do is Ironmans!)

Update 6 July 2014: I am now about to send back my THIRD Fenix2 unit due to the myriad of problems. This third unit, like the first, randomly subtracted 51 minutes from my elapsed time during the middle of a 3.5 hour run. My last unit locked up anytime I tried to navigate and crashed during my last 100 miler, making it unusable for the last 50 miles. With this, my THIRD Fenix2 unit in three months, I have never had a single week of training without a glitch, dropped sensors, lockups, dropped breadcrumb trail or the like. Perhaps 4th time's a charm? The only thing less reliable than the watch is Garmin's tech support, who continually says "wow, we've never heard of that happening before." Bullpucky. The forums are littered with people with tons of problems and no love from Garmin. This watch is a joke. A mean one.

PRIOR REVIEW: I've had it less than a month, and and had no fewer than eight unique and serious lockup or totally whacky failures with it. I will note that if I do an activity for an hour or two, no issues. It's when you `push' the thing on a 4/5/6+ hour run that it fails in some manner more times than not. Here's an example of what you too can experience on a long run, which is what happened to me on my 100k trail race (running) yesterday, even with Garmin's 'stable' v2.9 update:

1. Around an hour and fifty minutes (1:50), the heart rate monitor and the footpod were lost. This is a common occurrence with this watch.

2. About 30 min later, the entire watch locked up. While running (during the race, damnit), I pressed and held the light key to shut it off, then on again. When it came back on, the HR and footpod were reading again, and the elapsed race time seemed to be about right.
