More About the Author

Jason D. O'Grady developed an affinity for Apple computers after using the original Lisa, and this affinity turned into a bona-fide obsession when he got the original 128 KB Macintosh in 1984.

He started writing one of the first Web sites about Apple (O'Grady's PowerPage; www.powerpage.org) in 1995 and is considered to be one of the fathers of blogging. He has been a frequent speaker at the Macworld Expo conference and a member of the conference faculty.

After winning a major legal battle with Apple in 2006, he set the precedent that independent journalists are entitled to the same protections under the First Amendment as members of the mainstream media.

O'Grady is the author of The Nexus One Pocket Guide, The Droid Pocket Guide, The Google Phone Pocket Guide, The Garmin nüvi Pocket Guide (Peachpit Press), Corporations That Changed the World: Apple Inc. (Greenwood Press), and a contributor to The Mac Bible (Peachpit Press). In addition, he has contributed to numerous Mac publications over the years.

When he's not writing about Apple for ZDNet at The Apple Core (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple), he enjoys spending time with his family in southern New Jersey.

This is a great pocket size book. I am pretty tech oriented. And I have owned plenty of GPS units, from lots of manufacturers, including Garmin.

I must say I found this pocket easy to read, with some tips that escaped me.

Keep in mind it covers a broad range of Garmin units, so not all the tips and observations will apply to your unit. Make sure you buy this second edition and not the older, first addition.

All in all money well spent.

After a 6,000 mile trip in my 2010 Outback with mixed success with my Nuvi 855 (replaced my 760), I was quite frustrated. Still a relative newbie to GPSs, I still retained the idea that they did everything but wash dishes. On the long straight interstates, it worked perfectly, as the 760 had when doing local (my County) Census mapping. I was impressed with its convenience and accuracy. I'd grown up a Boy Scout and military, being very familiar with how to read maps. But headed South near Denver, suddenly, despite telling it "no toll roads" in the settings, it wanted me to go East to what I knew was a toll road. I ignored it, and drove the Interstate through Denver, quickly understanding why it violated my instructions: lunchtime traffic. Well, it saved me a few bucks, but now I was not quite so trustful. Easy way to Las Cruces with a stopover in Las Vegas (NM), and locally it served quite well. Then another long, mostly bleak I-10 to Houston, but it said I could do 85 mph! No way, maximum on U.S. Interstates is 75! Yes way! Posted speed limit, so I sped up. Pretty straight shot until I got near San Antonio, and it said to take the next right to go left to Fredricksburg. Why? San Antonio had a perfectly good Interstate bypass. Choice: follow the questionnable GPS or trust my instincts? Checked the time, near noon, I'll trust the GPS one more time. Well, it was a mixed blessing, technically shorter, lower speed limit much of the way, certainly full of places of interest, but I was not happy. Got to Houston, and the GPS initially worked fine locally, next day didn't want to give me maps or anything. 2 days later, it was working fine after finding a place to change location maps in the tools. The original instructions with the unit didn't say anything about that.Read more ›

Bought the book to answer questions about unknown particulars of operating Garmin Nuvi GPS. Was not totally pleased with the purchase because the book did not give step by step procedures for operating the Nuvi nor did it provide other directions that you would expect to be addressed by the Garmin owner's manual(which were'nt). This book is an outline of GPS's in general and a "nice to have" item for those who love to read but did little to get me going on the road with my GPS. We had to learn to operate our Nuvi using the trial and error method.

The booklet is much better than garmin's instructions, but is now somewhat dated as later models are not addressed. It pre-dates the 2595 I recently purchased. Buy it knowing it will help but not be an end all.

Nicely written. Good reference guide for beginners and good quick reference for those who don't use your Nuvi often enough to remember how to do the fancy stuff. Wish it went into more detail.
