Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The GPS 18 is a GPS sensor targeted to OEM clients for use in automotive, fleet vehicle, and electronics applications in which a small, highly accurate GPS receiver is needed. This 12-parallel-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver comes with a CMOS-level serial and an integrated magnetic base. The puck-like receiver is 2.4 inches in diameter and weighs only a few ounces, making it an ideal solution for applications where space is at a premium.

The GPS 18 comes in three different cable configurations: A-style USB; DB-9 pin serial with 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter (PC); or bare wire (LVC). The PC and LVC versions both default to output data in the industry-standard NMEA 0183 data format, but users may also program it to output data in the Garmin proprietary format, while the USB version produces data only in the Garmin proprietary format. All three versions of the GPS 18 come complete with non-volatile memory for storage of configuration information, a real-time clock, and raw measurement output data for sophisticated customer applications.

Product Description

The GPS 18 is designed for a variety of system applications. The GPS 18 USB, GPS 18 PC and GPS 18 LVC provide precise GPS positioning using correction data derived from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). When receiving WAAS corrections, the GPS 18 USB, GPS 18 PC and GPS 18 LVC can provide position accuracy to less than 3 meters, 95% typical. These products offer excellent EMI/RFI performance for easy integration into systems that will be operated near mobile computing devices and wireless communications equipment. The GPS 18 USB and GPS 18 PC are designed to plug into most laptop PC's. The GPS 18 USB receives power and data via a single USB connection!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works with everything. Great performance., May 9, 2006

This review is from: Garmin GPS 18 GPS PC/Serial Interface Sensor for OEM Clients (Electronics)
I prefer the PC version over the USB because of it's compatibility with everything. Even thought I don't have a serial port in my laptop I actually got a USB-to-Serial converter just to use the GPS18 PC.

Make sure to configure the unit's baud speed by using Garmin's configuration software. It originally comes working at 4800 but it supports 38400. 4800 is too slow to get updated location data and may cause the movement in GPS navigation software to lag.

I purchased this product for use with a uniden BCT15 gps enabled scanner. It aquires signal fast, even without a clear "view" of the sky. I mounted the gps sensor concealed under the dash, and have never had a prblem with loss of signal. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a good, reliable gps input signal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great item for a Uniden scanner, February 6, 2007

This review is from: Garmin GPS 18 GPS PC/Serial Interface Sensor for OEM Clients (Electronics)
This item was bought for the primary purpose of working in conjunction with the Uniden BCD996T mobile scanner. The scanner has the capability of monitoring statewide trunking radio sites. The Garmin GPS 18 operates by opening and closing statewide trunking radio cellsites, with the use of Long and Lat coordinates. This item is very effective for it's purpose and is highly recommended for those who'll use it for this purpose.
