I just started the hobby. Didnt want to spend a lot of money if I found out the hobby wasnt for me. Turns out im hooked. No, seriously, hooked. Ive ''been sick'' from work alot latley. This detector is fantastic. Ive had my ace 150 for @ 3 months and have half filled a large mason jar with coins. All kindsa cool trinkets and about 9 billion pull tabs. It has found coins 14 inches deep. 2 weeks ago I found my favorite prize to date. A 1893 barber dime in really good condition too (was only 3 inchs deep in my back yard). The machine does its job. My only complaints are...1) nickles almost always pings on the pull tab icon. Thats why ive dug 9 billion tabs. 2) dug tons of nails when its pinging wildly on coin/silver icon. But thats about it. For what I spent on it theres no way I could really complain. Im sure a more expensive one would have better target ID but this machine is great. I also just got the garrett pro pointer. That is one truly wonderful tool. It saves so much searching and sifting time. Dig a hole, stick the pointer in,follow the beeps. It picks quarters up at around 2.5 inches and dimes around 1.5 inches away. Easy. Fun. Nice way to pass time. And profitable. I would totally reccomend this detector (and pro pointer) to anyone. Its light, easy on batteries, easy to use. Hope this review helps you out. Happy hunting!

My 10 year old stepson wanted a metal detector for his birthday. He is a pretty well-behaved and responsible young man and I've always leaned towards avoiding "toy" tools. In my opinion rather than encouraging learning they tend to just cause more frustration. (Anyone ever use a kiddie fishing pole for more than a month??) So I decided that I was going to get him a "real" metal detector. This is also well outside my own knowledge, I've never owned or used one before. My impressions were good right out of the box. I watched the included dvd and found pretty quickly that it's not really that complicated a device* (I'll come back to that, please don't burn me yet!!) Fairly quickly I had a fair grasp of how it works and it wasn't really difficult to explain it to my stepson. My first idea was to take him up into the woods behind my house (roughly a half mile mostly up hill) where I knew there to be an old house foundation from a very long time ago. (There aren't even roads there anymore and haven't been in my lifetime.) I ended up carrying it and the weight really isn't that bad. I remembered not long after arriving at the top of the hill that I had forgotten to bring extra batteries. Didn't end up being an issue, we were there probably an hour and a half and the batteries held up just fine. Our haul ended up being several rusted nails, a massively rusted axe head and an old door hinge. We had fun though so it's all good. It read iron mostly on the nails though it did occasionally misread on the larger items. The axe head and the hinge both read coins I believe. I really didn't expect it to be 100% dead on accurate though so I wasn't disappointed. Going back to me not seeing it as that complicated a device...Read more ›

This one is great for beginner or intermediate user. The down side of the unit is it's sensitivity to aluminum, so if you'll try using it at the beach, you'll find alot of aluminum!!! :-) But it finds other metals and items perfectly.

This is an inexpensive detector to see if you like treasure hunting and perhaps to let the kids play with. It is intended for use on dry land (moist grass OK, no immersion in water). It is light weight, comfortable on your arm, and easy to use and to read. I tried testing its calibration on metal objects of known composition, and I found that it tended to jump back and forth between categories (between iron and nickel, for example). It does not discriminate between silver and aluminum, as they have similar conductivity. It only sounds off while you are sweeping it over the target; if you stop and hold it still the sound stops. It must be in motion to find targets. It didn't miss anything. While I did not find my silver ring I did find every gum wrapper, pull tab, nail, steel can, and mystery metal present. If you are serious about treasure hunting this one may be a little too generic in its hits. It can make for an entertaining afternoon if you just want to try it casually.

I bought two of these one for me one for my wife, I am stationed in Belgium and i have only had time to go out once but they do work and are very accurate in telling you if it is iron, nickle or other metals. So far I have found a TON of broken plows bits, and a gold wedding band (one of my friends buried it to play a prank on me) They are very fun to play with and a great way to pass time. They do work great but if you have them in close proximity with the sensitivity up they will act funny, so if you are close turn the sensitivity levels down, this may be a true statement with all detectors but I am a noob in this field.

Can be a little touchy at first til you get use to the sensitivity of each setting..
Found quarters under 6" of soil and grass.. Don't waste time and money on cheaper models.. This is a good one to start with..
