Bridge Records is pleased to be releasing the first in a series of Garrick Ohlsson Beethoven Sonata discs as part of its new Garrick Ohlsson Edition. This disc includes one each of Beethoven’s shortest and longest Sonatas (Op. 78 and Op. 7 respectively) as well as one of Beethoven’s late masterpieces- Op. 101. Garrick Ohlsson's emerging Beethoven series may turn out to be the best Beethoven playing in this generation. Quite literally, every note, every firguration, every prhase, every run and chord is effortlessly shaped so that one hears it as if for the first time. But this is not a mannered and fussy approach. Ohlsson's astonishing care is always at the service of the unfolding musical narrative, the movement's shape and temporal unfolding. Most remarkable each sonata and each movement in Ohlsson's hands becomes a completely distinct and inimitable musical utterance. Beethoven's unstinting expression of new ideas, new ways to think in music, new ideas, new formal arrangements--has never been as clear to me before from any other pianist. Even the most saturated of Beethoven listeners will discover fresh insights from these performances.

Very exciting playing. Best of all is Ohlsson's sound. When called for, he really knows how to make the piano sing. I give him high marks for presenting the overall architecture of the pieces. Not an episodic and choppy presentation. There are many 5-star recordings of the sonatas, but this is among the best of the top flight. I look forward to acquiring his other Beethoven volumes!
