Biography

The only thing growing faster than Gary Clark Jr.’s acclaim -- among fans, critics and iconic musicians alike -- is the scope of his talents and tastes.

But nothing you have seen, heard or read can prepare you for the power and scope of his debut album, Blak And Blu. Not the buzz from his Run-The-House tour through the 2012 festival season which included Coachella, New Orleans Jazz ... Read more in Amazon's Gary Clark Jr. Store

Whoa. After his early recordings that showed much promise, Gary Clark, Jr. shows us what the blues sounds like in the 21st Century. With this set Clark proves he's one of the first and best blues artists of this era. This is one of those sets that sounds even better at loud volume--so be careful and don't blow your speakers out. This set, compiled from various gigs from the band's recent tour, is a good sampling of both his guitar and vocal abilities.

And his band is equally good. Listen to second guitarist Eric "King" Zapata, whose leads and fills blend with Clark's into one sonic force that penetrates into your head. And with Clark's fiery leads they lay down some mean sounds. At times you can hear the influence of another Texas blues guitarist, T-Bone Walker--just up-dated into the 21st Century. If for some reason Walker is unfamiliar to you, check out the recently released 5 CD set of Walker's music from across his career. And sometimes in Clark's full force speaker-shredding guitar assaults he is sometimes reminiscent of the White Stripes' Jack White. No matter if it's a slow blues or an up tempo tune, this band has it. And the rhythm section is no slouch either. Bassist John Bradley and drummer Johnny Radelat are rock solid and can get into just the right groove almost intuitively. They are so tight yet flexible enough to go where Clark wants, they could make Chicago's Southside blues bands sit up and take notice. Together this is one hot band whose time is here. Through constant gigging they have honed their sound to a keen edge. What follows are a few highlights.

Just listen to Muddy Waters' "Catfish Blues", with the band taking it nice and slow in order to wring out every last nuance of the tune.

My introduction to Gary Clark Jr. was seeing him in the movie Honeydripper (great flick, btw), and I just thought he was some pretty boy actor who could play guitar and sing, which obviously was impressive enough. :-) after listening to this CD...holy mackerel...a blues monster! Great, bluesy vocals who can funk or soul it up when he wants to, and MAN, that guitar tone!! Like Hendrix's tone, but even dirtier, heavier, and beefier!! Not sure who's playing every solo between him and his second guitarist, but both of them have killer tones to die for!! Awesome playing throughout, too! No shredding a la Joe Bonamassa, but just soulful licks with HUGE TONE fired off right and left!

This is MY kind of music, and usually artists in blues rock are underground, but somehow Gary (and Joe B. too) found their way onto the mainstream charts...way to go, guys!! And thank you, music fans, for showing some taste here and there...lol! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

I would say more 4 and 1/2 than 5, but finally the album I have been waiting for him to make. First the vinyl is the way to go if you are in to that format. A friend has the cd and we compared back to back and the vinyl delivers much more bottom with a fatter/tighter bass sound than the cd that adds the punch needed to really let that guitar sing, so the vinyl is easily the better sounding of the two formats (all though not trying to be negative on the cd as I love that format as well when done right)! I like that 10 of the songs are original and the ones from his studio album take on a entire new form here with much more fire and power breathing through them. Of course the sound varies at times since these songs are from different shows, but that is fine by me as we get the best of the best. As he continues to grow I would like to hear more of an original guitar sound develop from him, but this is one amazing live album, a guitar lovers dream! I have to say I was a little disappointed in his studio album as I found it to slick and uneven, but talk about delivering the most electrifying hard driven blues rock album in quite some time, my oh my call someone to fix the crack in my foundation as this baby can cause an earthquake!

As an old-time (over 40-years) lover and aficionado of true electric blues… it isn’t too often that I can enthusiastically tip the proverbial “electric-blues-hat”… to an extremely talented “youngster” (30-years-old) like Gary Clark Jr. Believe me… I search day and night for new young-blood talent… that has the heart and soul… that not only appreciates **TRUE-ELECTRIC-BLUES** … but searches it out… and attacks it with a passion… and a vengeance. This double CD… that encompasses over NINETY-SIX-MINUTES… of almost pure electric blues… is like a man dying of thirst in the desert… not only finding water in the middle of the desert… but it’s like finding an open bar in the same desert oasis.

If you’ll indulge an absolute lifetime lover of electric blues… a lover… that often “goes home alone”… after searching for the next generation of electric blues… for me to enjoy in my waning years… as well as pass on to my children… this double CD is like winning the lottery! Gary Clark Jr. at times… obviously is reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix… who many followers don’t realize… loved the electric blues… and who… in the middle of the “psychedelic” genre… if you really paid attention… all his music was built around his love of electric blues. But for you old-timers… and as a “heads-up”… to the newer generation… so many songs on this CD are eerily reminiscent of **THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND**… and believe me that is a giant electric-blues-compliment. My first indoctrination… and immediate love affair with the electric-blues was over forty-years-ago with Paul Butterfield’s all-time classic album… “EAST-WEST”. I actually got to see them in person once and they played “Catfish Blues” and I never forgot it. (Written by Muddy Waters).
