Product Description

Gary Fong has made a simple modification to his current LightSphere Universal light diffuser to make it into….. Well….. A snoot but not just any snoot. The ribbed diffusion panels on the inside of the LSU when silvered magnify and project the light forward onto the subject with a controlled of the LSU when silvered magnify and project the light forward onto the subject with a controlled but soft light burst— great for hair lighting, selective lighting of subject matter and any other use that would require more controlled directional light than Gary’s previous LightSphere products.

It is a light modifier.

I have been using Gary Fong's LightSphere for quite a few years now and have always been satisfied.

There are marks on the strap slot where I suspect they break it loose from the mold.

I have read some of the reviews. And I think some are missing the point of what this product is for. It is not a light diffuser. It is a light modifier. It's purpose is to give a spot light effect. To illustrate how I might use this item. In the 30's and 40's there was a Hollywood Studio Photographer George Hurrell, He did studio and Glamour portraits with a spot light effect. Look him up and see the beautiful work he did. And you will see just one type of use for this item. Also as a professional photographer I get pretty good payment for my work. So the price of this item is small for what it allows me to do with it. It's light weight, easy to carry. And if it breaks I buy another one. Nothing last for ever. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

Sometimes I wonder how people can write negative reviews when they have no clue how to use a product. I just received Gary's Snoot. It's exactly as promised and more. Unless you don't have a clue, get this item for your tool kit. I was having issues at the beach when using other light modifiers. I wanted the light to be "concentrated" so it would not look obvious that I was using flash. You can take a peek at a "real world" sample of what can be done with this tool. Sample photos is shown at the top of this page with the watermark MyBaldPhotographer.com

Keep up the good work Gary. If you can make a collapsable version of this snoot....that would be awesome!

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE ***********
March 20, 2011 - B R O K E in less than a year ***********

This cheap, flimsy Gary Fong plastic snoot broke in less than a year; it's rendered useless. I had been very careful with it but so will no longer recommend any Gary Fong product.

--- Original review ---
Fong must be making a fortune selling cheap plastic. I bought this at a local camera shop for 54; here are some impressions from this device.

1. Way too much $$$ for what it is: plastic. That's why 4 stars and not 5.

2. It is a light concentrator; not a "Light Diffuser". It works as advertised and creates very harsh, strong, controlled, directional light: blinding if you have to look at it for the photo. But, this is by design: it has a reflective chrome plastic surface on the inside. If you need to know more, research what grids and snoots do for flash photography.

3. Generally, if used as a sole source of light, it is good to use for male subjects. Your female friends will not remain friends long if you use it for them.

4. The "Universal mounting system" is plastic tabs and a Velcro strap. They engage the flash to hold it on fairly securely. However, the tabs feel flimsy & cheap so I don't no how long it will last. If it broke, I wouldn't replace it and will return it and will update this review to let you know. But, if it lasts, I will be glad I did buy it because it will get allot of use in the coming years.

I'm a huge Gary Fong fan. I've got 2 flip cages, one of each size. Very nice construction. Extremely useful design. That was my expectation with the PowerSnoot. I have to say, even though it work as advertised, it does seem flimsy. There are marks on the strap slot where I suspect they break it loose from the mold. I'm almost offended by the construction quality. This does not seem to me to be a $50+ product. Maybe if I'd paid $25, I'd feel better about it. Considering sending it back. Gave it 3 stars because it works so well. I'm just not sure I've got a pressing need for this device and I can't justify it as an investment as I don't think it will wear well with time.

Yes, I was surprised when I saw that it was plastic, but since I have a Nikon D3 and SB800 flash, I already have a heavy setup. So I am glad it is plastic due to weight.
Yes, it produces a strong harsh light which is exactly what I was looking for.
I can produce this in Photoshop by upping the contrast a lot also. But if you want that edgy look that is so prevalent on TV, this is way to achieve it if you aren't in the studio. My studio snoot cost way more than this did, and I am using it on location in front of a graffiti wall and it is just what I need.
