Editorial Reviews

In the summer of 1964, Gary Lewis & the Playboys started their ascent to superstardom after being signed to Liberty records. In 1965, the band released the single, This Diamond Ring which climbed to the top of the pop charts and garnered the band their first #1 hit. Their second single, Count Me In went to #2, proving that their success was no fluke. The success of the band continued with 10 more Top 40 hits between 1965-1968 including another #1 single, "Save Your Heart for Me". In 1965, Gary himself was named Cash Box magazine's "Male Vocalist of the Year", beating other contenders, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. As part of the Pop Legends Live concert series, Gary Lewis & the Playboys take to the stage to perform their greatest hits and other favorites. As an added feature, Pop Legends Live also takes you backstage for a rare behind-the-scenes interview with Gary Lewis. Includes This Diamond Ring, Save Your Heart for Me, Sealed with a Kiss, She's Just My Style and 7 more!

Over-all, nicely done. Video quality is very good. Sound is OK, one simply must remember watching any act from this era in present day isn't going to live up to the original recordings. Gary hadn't reached 20 years of age when he had already recorded his seven top ten hits. He'll be 60 in July '06, yet his voice has held up quite well, i.e. He does an excellent job singing "Count Me In". No, he doesn't sound like he's 20 anymore, but still he holds his own. Song selection is what you'd expect, however, it is curious he performs a couple songs that were not hits while omitting songs that did make the Top 40 '66-'68. The most notable flaw for me was "Everybody Loves A Clown". What set that song apart was the use of a harpsichord as the lead instrument in the original recording. The keyboard player does an admirable job trying to replicate that sound but obviously it falls short and the song suffers because of it.

Throughout the video Lewis provides insightful commentary which is well done, although it would have been good if he'd spent a least a couple moments discussing the original band members (kind of a where are they now). Perhaps the nicest touch of all comes at the end of the video which has clips of Gary performing with his father. Very well done.

Basically, if you are a Gary Lewis fan, this DVD is a must have, considering, where else are you going to find this sort of thing?

I am very pleased with this DVD. It includes all the hit songs that Gary Lewis is connected with in addition to brief comments between songs by Gary regarding the upcoming song. The ending has a funny rendition between Jerry Lewis and his father doing Sonny Boy. A special feature section includes an interview with Gary in addition to Jerry and Gary repeating the Sonny Boy routine that was done at the end of the main program between Jerry and his father. If you enjoy Gary Lewis's singing you will enjoy this DVD. The entire performance lasts approximately 45 minutes.

I'd always loved Gary Lewis and the Playboys songs from way back when. This video brought everything up to date for me. Though he doesn't sound like his records (understandably), it was still satisfying to see him on stage doing his songs the best way he knew how. The interview takes during the performance were also a nice touch. The behind the scenes info, especially how he got into the business and how songs came about, made the purchase worthwhile. As was mentioned, at the end credits, there's a complete clip of Jerry Lewis with his Dad, Danny, singing "Sonny Boy" together. In the separate Gary Lewis interview portion of the DVD, they show a part from the same program with Gary and his Dad performing the same song in the same way. There's also more clips of Gary as a youngster, including a part he did in his Dad's 1959 movie, Rockabye Baby, where he plays his Dad's character as a youngster and singing (I was never aware of that before). Then there's the part where he talks about taking up the drums at the age of 5, and how a friend of his Dad's showed him a thing or two.

No Gary Lewis fan should be without this one.

I just love this,

for years I wanted to see gary lewis and the playboys but had to wait until they came to my area..time passed .. and for my birthday I got tickets . I was so happy to see them live, and for those who dont get the chance ...get this DVD!!

this is the closest thing to seeing them live.. and gary lewis also being a drummer (which he doesnt do that much anymore.and didnt do it when I saw him live ) but on this dvd he gets behind the drums for a song ..happy to see he still has it.. whenever I want to see gary I put this dvd in my machine.. great stuff..

OK all the reviews are pretty right on... but actually Gary Lewis can't really sing too good but the songs are great and nostalgic. He can still play the drums! The end with his Dad is great. His outfit however is ridiculous and with a better one would have made it better. Its the same as the Association DVD and their lounge act outfits. Anyway its worth listening to and seeing. His interview between songs is great.

First, let's make sure you know what this is and is not. This DVD is of the older/current Gary Lewis and the Playboys, with Gary reviewing the group's career from its early beginnings to the point this DVD was produced. It is a combination of old videos and the current group preforming. I am glad that I bought it, being a long time fan of the group, and if you are as well, then this is for you too. Just be sure you understand that this is not a concert or collection of concerts of the original group only, but a history, containing performances by both the original group and the current group.
