Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8Every chapter of this informative biography begins with an appropriate quotation taken from one of Paulsens published works or interviews. These quotes introduce readers to different periods or events in the authors life and his work. Peterss writing is descriptive and entertaining. The inclusion of dialogue and dramatic scenes keeps the interest high and should capture the attention of reluctant readers. However, the author cites no sources, making it difficult to determine whether she has fictionalized this account or simply drawn heavily from Paulsens books. Either way, she provides an entertaining look at a complex and interesting man. The black-and-white photos are, unfortunately, grouped in the center of the book rather than appearing chronologically.Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA

From Booklist

Children who love Paulsen's books will be fascinated by his own rough-and-tumble life. Despite his early years with alcoholic parents and difficulties in school and with peers, Paulsen found solace in reading and in the great outdoors. Arranged in chronological order, each chapter begins with a quote from one of Paulsen's books, connecting his writings with his own life experiences. Peters addresses difficult issues forthrightly, including Paulsen's own alcoholism and continuing health problems. A straightforward, concise biography of a favorite author, with black-and-white photos showing Paulsen as a very young child and as an adult with friends and sled dogs. Karen Hutt
