When
Green on Red, the self-titled CD in this two-title reissue, was released in 1982, the originally Arizona-based Green on Red were bracketed with Los Angeles Paisley Underground clique, then spearheaded by
Dream Syndicate,
Rain Parade, and the
Bangles. Green on Red were always a little wilder. Though cheaply produced,
Green on Red is a singular debut. By the time
Gas Food Lodging was recorded, Green on Red had added guitarist
Chuck Prophet, whose virtuosity anchored tracks such as "Thats What Dreams Were Made For" and "Hair of the Dog." Sonic and spiritual followers of
Neil Young and
Creedence Clearwater Revival, Green on Red made music that still sounds remarkably fresh.
