I really tried to love this CD as i'm a big fan. I was hoping for greatness like their first three CD's but this is not. Biggest problem is the mixing/recording is terrible. Some songs are ackward. I am glad Dirty Looks are recording again just wish it was better.

Here we have yet another Dirty Looks release. How this band keeps going is beyond me, but thankfully so. You probably are not looking into this release without some knowledge of the band so I will assume a baseline knowledge exists. Here are some basics:

SOUND:

Close to Slave To The Machine in that the sound is pretty powerfull and crowded. This one is a bit less muddy which is probably good. It's a little bit more of a crisp sound and the vocals are slightly higher in the mix.

SONGWRITING:

Really good this time around. Many of these tunes are immediate classics and written in a similar style and with similar catchy phrasing to older classics but maybe a touch heavier.

VOCALS:

I can't say Henrik really sings like he used to. He is a bit tighter and less melodic but boy does he really lay down some awesome lines here and they fit the songs really well the way they are written. The guitars just seem to flow right into the vocals and it's like the singer is somewhat ignoring the way the song is supposed to be sung and just going off. Really cool.

GUITARS:

Sounds like classic Dirty Looks style guitars but I am not a guitar player. Basically like I said the music is most similar to the better tunes on Slave but with a slightly more similarity to older classic material.

The album cover on this one looks cool but also it looks kind of basic. This made me wonder if this was really a major Dirty Looks release or kind of a slap it together low budget deal. Trust me, this is a real, full release with all new tunes and they are good all the way through. It is also good to know the album was somehow released in a minor way with the original ten tracks but now Perrisrecords has or will re-release with two bonus tracks. The bonus tracks include Paul Lidel on guitars and involved in the songwriting. I do not have these two tracks at this time, however, there are samples of both of these tracks at the Perrisrecords website and from my listen they sound as good as the ten main tracks and the sound seems identical to me to they don't appear to be just pasted on.

You can't go wrong with this new Dirty Looks CD and if you are a fan, this is a real treat to have. Rocking just as hard as ever and with that distinct vocal sound.
