Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this biography, Gullette (English, Simmons Coll.), a founding editor of Ploughshares , introduces the life and writing of Gaspar Garcia Laviana. Born in Spain, Gaspar went to Nicaragua as a young priest and adopted the country as his homeland. Encountering opposition from the government when he attempted to improve his parishioners' lives, he joined the Sandinista revolution, convinced that armed struggle against the corrupt Somoza regime was politically necessary and also spiritually justifiable. Gullette insightfully explores this evolution, which eventually led to Gaspar's violent death. In addition, the author effectively intersperses the biographical narrative with selections from Gaspar's poetry (in a bilingual format) to "suggest the parallels between his private mind and his public acts." An articulate book; recommended for academic libraries and large general collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars GASPAR GARCIA LAVIANA, January 23, 2001

This review is from: Gaspar!: A Spanish Poet/Priest in the Nicaraguan Revolution (Paperback)
When I left Nicaragua as a 14 year old after the 1979 revolution I heard Gaspar's name in many of the sandinistas songs I was curious about this man. When I finish with the book many questions were answer about the man and the backgroung of the Nicaragua revolution. I recomend this book to other Nicaraguan's who are in search of answer to why the Revolution needed to happend.
