Editorial Reviews

Review

"Containing over 750 large color illustrations and a consistent format for each chapter throughout, this text will be an accessible and useful reference for pathologists, GI specialists, hepatologists, and residents. Covering all the neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders of the GI tract, each section includes clinical features, gross and microscopic features, ancillary studies, differential diagnoses, and prognostic and therapeutic considerations. Many inset boxes and tables containing fact sheets and lists of pathologic features are included, reinforcing the text and providing a rapid reference. Each chapter concludes with a selected bibliography organized by subject." SciTech Book News, December 2005

GASTROINTESTINAL AND LIVER PATHOLOGY

This book belongs to the series 'Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology' edited by JR Goldblum. As stated by the series Editor in the foreword 'the goal of every book in the series is to provide essential information that any pathologist whether general or sub-specialised, in training or in practice, would find useful in the evaluation of virtually any type of specimen encountered'.

The 19 chapters of this book are actually designed to cover the 'essentials' of gastrointestinal, pancreatic and hepatic pathology. The main pathological entities are outlined and there are inserts ('fact sheets' and 'pathological features') which provide a very useful summary for the practicing pathologist and can be of major interest to trainees. The figures are of high quality and usually very representative (an inversion between the legends of figures 10-18 and 10-19 can be easily detected).

It is a huge task to summarise in a single volume the whole field of gastrointestinal, pancreatic and liver pathology. I have a good opinion of the book that can be useful as a first level reference for practicing pathologists but can also help the gastroenterologist to understand the process of pathological diagnosis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful text, March 14, 2007

I've had some complaints with this series, but this is one of the better texts. I have used it extensively and read most of it for review. The tables are quite good, and most illustrations/photos are good. It's certainly much better than teh GI chapters I've seen in multiauthored surg path texts. Definitely worth the money.

2.0 out of 5 stars very incomplete, March 30, 2010
This review is from: Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology: A Volume in the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology Series, 1e (Hardcover)
This book is not worth the money. I had hoped the book would be something in between what you'd find in a general surg path text and something more voluminous like Odze. Unfortunately, this book is more cursory than any of the major surg path texts. they omitted appendiceal neoplasms (why??) and when i recently wanted to look up hepatic adenoma subtypes, i noticed they were not described. overall, if you have a surg path text, you don't need this. if you want an adequate gi path text, buy odze.
