5.0 out of 5 stars Creating Foodies At Any Age
The basic tenant of The Gastrokid Cookbook is essentially to provide you with a repertoire of sophisticated, nourishing and kid-friendly recipes that are substantial enough for adults while still being appealing to children. 1.0 out of 5 stars nothing here to help feed your kids
What a total let down. And don't let the snobby commenters fool you as I did. It's a cookbook, that's it. There's nothing here to help you get your kids interested in the food. I am a foodie, and my 2.5 year old likes good food too, that's pretty easy in our family. There's no effort to get any VEGETABLES into the kids. There's a recipe for steamed CLAMS in here! I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Creating Foodies At Any Age, August 18, 2009
This review is from: The Gastrokid Cookbook: Feeding a Foodie Family in a Fast-Food World (Hardcover)
The basic tenant of The Gastrokid Cookbook is essentially to provide you with a repertoire of sophisticated, nourishing and kid-friendly recipes that are substantial enough for adults while still being appealing to children. It's certainly much less tantrum inducing if you whip up an alternate meal for your child at dinner time if you've decided to enjoy a nice Bolognese that evening, but Yeomans and Garvey are here to encourage you not to. Their delicious array of recipes from Citrus-Cured Chicken Breast to Mod Mediterranean Braised Beef Brisket are sure to please everyone who sits down at your dining room table whether they are three, thirty-three, or one-hundred and three.

While entrees like Orange and Ginger Soy Pork Ribs might sound impossibly time consuming and difficult you'll be shocked to learn that the entire recipe consists of only nine ingredients and the instructions are presented in barely more than two succinct paragraphs. This is exactly how each recipe is laid out. Yeomans and Garvey know that you don't have time to peruse a three-page cooking tome when you have a baby, a toddler, and a dog all swarming at your feet.

After looking through the cookbook I decided that I had to try their Roasted Chickpea Bruschetta. It was beyond simple and really only involved opening two cans of super healthy chickpeas, the pitting of a few olives, a quick chop, slice, and a drizzle of oil. I'm just in love with this simple savory dish and I thoroughly enjoyed the salty combination of olives, tangy vinegar, and garlic. They all melded perfectly with the delicately roasted chickpeas and were an excellent topping for freshly toasted baguette slices. And as per the author's observation in the text, kids will undoubtedly enjoy frolicking after the little round beans as they inevitably tumble from their bread slices. My cats had quite the field day with runaway chickpeas last night. In addition I fully intend to use the leftovers as a topping for salad tonight.

5.0 out of 5 stars my first recipe - yum!, August 3, 2009
This review is from: The Gastrokid Cookbook: Feeding a Foodie Family in a Fast-Food World (Hardcover)
I just received this cookbook yesterday and am so excited to try the recipes. Normally, I feel like when I am reading a cookbook there are more recipes that I DON'T want to try than I do - but not with Gastrokid. There are so many great sounding dishes. I purchased it because I'm trying to make meals that will satisfy both my husband and myself, and my 19 month old. I want him to like the type of food that we like - not just chicken nugs and tater tots. I just made my first recipe tonight - the pork with caramelized milk sauce. I don't know why it tastes so good, but it is excellent! It's also fun to read - with good ideas tossed in here and there about how to serve different foods to your child. Glad I got this one!

i love this book! visually, the photos and layout are so clever, but what's really impressive is that the recipes actually work. tons of great tips on seasoning, shopping and serving. practical but never pretentious ideas for getting kids to eat fresh and seasonal (the pizza recipes are inspired). oh, and my favorite is the roasted chickpea bruschetta. i've had mario batali's version at babbo, and dare i say that gastrokid's is better!

Within 48 hours of owning this book I'd already made 4 recipes - all were fast, all were easy, all were with ingredients I had on hand and all were completely devoured by my family (a toddler, a six year old & dear hubby). For those scared by recipes that include baby octopus, read the front cover "Feeding a Foodie Family". This is not for people that cook with crisco or use peas from a can (unless of course you're trying to change your ways). My husband so enjoyed the Panko breaded "chicken nuggets" that I made tonight, he's actually sitting on the couch and reading through the cookbook himself - a first!

I think perhaps the battle over endless begging for mac and cheese night after night may finally be over. Thank you, Gastrokid, for creating recipes I want to cook and kids will want to eat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes cooking delicious food seem accessible for all, August 19, 2009
This review is from: The Gastrokid Cookbook: Feeding a Foodie Family in a Fast-Food World (Hardcover)
We have always love to cook and experiment with food, but with hectic family life that had fallen by the wayside. Now that our kids are a bit older we are rediscovering our love of cooking. We just made our first recipe from the Gastrokid Cookbook and can't wait to try more. We made the grilled fennel and asparagus with parmesan and it was out of this world! Paired with some grilled mako shark, the entire meal -- from prep to plate -- took less than 25 minutes! This cookbook will be the salvation of many busy families looking for more healthful, flavorful food to serve any night of the week.

My daughter started cooking the day she opened this book. Perhaps any cookbook would have had this effect but the recipes here are medium-difficulty but clearly explained and delicious. We've tried out a few and been very pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good kids cookbook, January 28, 2011

I like this book a lot, it has tips for parents and the psychology of children surrounding the dinner table. I think it has a very realistic approach to problems that many parents face.
The recipes are good, but a bit gourmet, lots of ingredients.
