5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly Beautiful and Haunting Orchestral Jazz, April 24, 2004

This beautiful gem is by a man who can bring an incredible sound to an orchestra. The reviews that rave about this album are on target. I was first introduced to this mans unique but signature arrangements on the Sinatra album "Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim" and on several of Antonio Carlos Jobim's orchestral albums. His latest work with Diana Krall on "The Look of Love" helped make that CD a worldwide best seller...... he is a master of arrangement and his work with strings is magical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Class Act!, November 8, 2001
This review is from: Gate of Dreams (Audio CD)
This album has been a favorite of mine since I was about 10 years old. I'm pleased to see it on CD. I was intorduced to Mr. Ogerman and this album in 1977, and I've been hooked every since! I still listen to this album on a regular basis. If you're not familiar with Mr. Ogerman but consider yourself to be a true jazz lover, you have to add this to your collection. Mr. Ogerman is one of a kind...a true class act. This album is timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devotee, February 21, 2001

With this album I became a believer. A believer in the fact that there is nothing that Claus Ogerman cannot do musically. If he does not play every instrument he might as well; for his writing arrangements bring out the best in each one. He moves between styles and rhythms like a flowing river; sometimes fast and furious, sometimes gently allowing you to follow every scenic curve.

I am totally divided. I can't tell you if it's his beautiful string arrangements, rhythms, writing or sense of composition I like best. It's all great!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is really really GOOD!, June 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Gate of Dreams (Audio CD)
I have had this music in my life ever since it first came out. It never grows old and it grows on you. Who could ask for more . . . solos by the best George Benson, David Sanborn, Joe Sample, and Michael Brecker. And Claus Ogerman who puts it all together. This one will move your soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked Masterpiece!, August 19, 2009
This review is from: Gate of Dreams (Audio CD)
I was one weird high school dude in the 70's. While all of my friends were wearing out their Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" album (which I enjoyed too, just not as much as they did), I was expanding my musical horizons with artists like Grover Washington, George Benson, and Noel Pointer, among others. It was the lush orchestral landscapes of George Benson's "Breezin' " that opened my eyes to Claus Ogerman. I fell in love with this album and wore out two vinyl copies over the years. I bought the CD when it was released in 1990. It never strays far from my CD player, and was the first CD I digitized to lossless .flac for my digital music server. Although I heard side two of the album on a local jazz station back in 1977 and I bought it for that alone, "side one" has always been my favorite ("Time Passed Autumn Suite" through "Air Antique"). The entire album is a masterful fusion of verdant orchestra and jazz, featuring the finest and most celebrated fusion jazz players of the day. And it still stands well today. In fact in today's blighted, myopic music business, a masterpiece of this sort would never be green-lighted. "Gate of Dreams" stands the test of time as Claus Ogerman's greatest work.

I would love to see "Gate Of Dreams" re-released, but re-mastered prior to doing so. Although the CD is sonically excellent, there is noticeable tape hiss in the 1990 CD release.

Fantastic, seductive, moving, brilliant music. Ogerman could have made more albums like this for my taste. Thank God this one is on CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Melodic Blend of Orchestra and Small Jazz Combo, May 7, 2001

This is THE recording that redirected my taste in music, A delightful blend of Ogerman's haunting yet uplifting strains to framework the young virtuoso Michael Brecker's tenor sax, and the most competent and carefree picking by George Benson I've ever heard. David Sanborn's alto sax doesn't quite fit in with the mood set by this otherwise ingenious work, yet the whole suite comes together beautifully. Don't hesitate - make it yours.

I had this akbum on an old unmarked tape years ago and didn't know the artist. Thanks to the knowledgable assitance of fellow users of NAPSTER I was able to get this information and order it from Amazon, giving my money to Warner Brothers, the very people who are suing to shut this site down! This is a rich, emotionally stiring piece of work with subtle building phrases and fantastically worked crescendos and climaxes. An early jazz/fusion masterpiece!

Somewhat dated but simply wonderful. Ogerman's string arrangement's are however timeless. Creating a magical feeling in Air Antique particularly. Brecker's solo work is great.
