This was really a terrific suspense story. A really sneaky sort of story that you think is falling into place, however, the ending is quite a stunner. I truly like this story very much and look forward to other novels by this author. The old adage too good to be true certainly fit here. I would recommend it for readers that love a good mystery.

I read the first edition of "Gated".

Ok, there isn't anything incredibly new here...the theme of unsuspecting individuals moving into a creepy town with a sinister past is nothing new. But then again, what is new these days? Isn't there only like 5 major motifs upon which most stories are based?

Ok that all being said, the book was a tonne of fun!

Matt Drabble writes with an enjoyable combination of levity and edge. His words drip off the page like hot butter. Also, he has an incredible knack for developing characters within a relatively short period of time, making his stories rich and engaging from the get-go.

I could not put the book down and thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

N.B.

I have started reading Matt Drabble's "Fangland", and although, nothing new here in terms of story either, it is a lot of fun too!

Matt is a talented writer and i hope to be reading much more from him in the future.

When Michael and Emily Torrance, recovering from tragedy, move from England to the small American gated community of Eden Gardens their first experiences have them thinking they've moved to Eden itself. Everyone is over-the-top friendly and the town itself is immaculate in every way with a tram service linking every part of town containing a shop for any kind of merchandise or service. While they are now living in a wonderful new, spacious home with what appear to be ideal neighbors, even the Torrance's have to admit to themselves the town is very "Stepford." Indeed, as time goes by cracks begin to appear in the town's perfect-looking facade. Something evil is afoot and those in the community who do not tow the line soon begin to disappear or meet tragic ends, for there is a price to pay for "perfection." When Emily becomes pregnant the weirdness factor begins to creep up and her writer husband soon begins to notice some things out of place, leading him to begin investigating. And so the danger builds as the young couple and the town race toward an eerie, violent collision. I found the book to be well-written and with good character development. It's a genre I read quite often and this book, by Matt Drabble is comparable to the many Dean Koontz books I've read.

Matt Drabble does it again with another great book. Gated is a creepy journey into the perfect world of an isolated community that has an old world history and an even darker future. Nothing is as it seems in Eden and for one couple they are about to find out the hard way that sometimes the perfect neighborhood can go to hell in a hurry...unless they can find a way to stop it. Solid 4.5 Stars for Matt's latest novel.

First let me state that I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. I am a reviewer for Rose's Book Snobs.

This is my first read by Matt Drabble. I have to say I am impressed. Some nights I would fall asleep reading and my dreams were weird LOL!
I will think twice before I move into a gated community, look very careful at the fine print on any contract.
We meet a married couple Michael and Emily who are from the UK. They experienced a terrific loss and decided to it was time for a change. They packed up and moved to Eden. Well they were selected I should say.
Eden was made from pure evil but looks like heaven. The grass is always green, the weather is always sunny. There is no crime. If you were to work in Eden from an outside town you followed very strict rules. It seems like you can't do nothing bad in this town without someone knowing. I wasn't sure if the Sheriff or Casper was following them or what.
Every time we met a new character you got a brief background of where they came from and why they moved to Eden. Most people like Michael and Emily moved to make a new start. Eden was picture perfect for that start. The story line was smooth, there was a lot of action going on. There are a few cases where it felt gory. I am not sure if I would classify this book as horror or thriller or mystery. I guess in a way you can call it all 3. I was on the edge of my seat towards the end to see what happened. Who was going to live, or died. Who was actually running the town. This isn't my normal read but it pulled me in and kept me glued. I like it. I look forward to reading other books by Matt.

I bought this kindle edition (fortunately it was cheap) because of the good reviews and it sounded like it might be a good story. After reading for a while I had to check to see if the reviewers were reading the same book, it seems that they were. I am throwing in the towel at 36%. The writing is absolutely atrocious with poor sentence structure and grammar and a lot of repetition. I agree with the reviewer who said that this needs serious editing, I was warned! Some parts were so garbled I wasn't totally sure what they meant. Also, the main character in the book states that his favorite author is Stephen King, I am supposing that SK is also the author's favorite author as well since many, if not most, of the characters have a name from a Stephen King book, the main character's last name is Torrance. There is also a Creed, a Stillson, etc. That gimmick might be fun if the writing was better but it just comes off as pathetic. I don't really care what happens in the book anymore and at my 36% progress point I just ran into Tommy Ross (Carrie's date to the Prom). Hopefully the writer will do a bit of rewriting and invest in a good editor. I am moving on to something else.
