One More Time: Peru,
This review is from: The Gatekeepers #2: Evil Star (Hardcover)
"Brian remained where he was, sitting on the sofa, his legs slightly apart, his mouth hanging open. He had been like that ever since Gwenda had stuck the kitchen knife into his chest. It was still there, jutting out of the bloody rag that once had been his shirt." After Raven's Gate, Matt Freeman tries to put all of the events that have happened behind. Now living in a flat with Richard Cole, he attends a private school in Yorkshire and hopes to return back to his normal life. However, when a suicide bombing occurs at the school he knows he will never return. Matt and Richard are met by the Nexus to tell them that a second gate is about to open in Peru, and that a diary that tells where the gate is in the hands of a man named Morton. He meets with him but then leaves momentarily, Morton is killed and the diary stolen. Unwilling, Matt and Richard are whisked off to Peru in search of the gate where the two are split up. There he meets a street kid named Pedro who looks familiar but who he has never met before. He finds out Pedro is the second Gatekeeper. Now stuck in Peru and with the police looking for him and searching for the gate and Richard he travels the country and tries to learn more about Salamanda a rich businessman. Back in England, the Nexus is wondering if they have a traitor in the group. When Matt finds out Salamanda has the diary and plans to open the gate, he and Pedro are in for a race for their lives and the world. The second book in the Gatekeepers series is really good. Although it wasn't suspenseful as Raven's Gate, it made up for that with a lot of action. The genre of this book is suspenseful/fiction. What I liked about this book was that it was fast paced and kept into the plot with every chapter. The other reason why I liked this book was that the character showed lots of different emotions about how they did not want to get involved other people's problems. This almost like the Alex Rider series in which the main character is a 14 year-old boy who has special talents and are sought out by the secret organizations in England but do not want to get involved but do any way. (Anthony Horowitz did Alex Rider series). Some of the emotions I felt were shocked and sadness when the plot reveals characters and deaths. All in all, the book was a great sequel to Raven's Gate and I enjoyed it very much.

EVIL STAR is the second book in the Anthony Horowitz series called THE GATEKEEPERS.
In book one, titled Raven's Gate (The Gatekeepers), main character Matt discovers he is one of five specially chosen teens. Their purpose is to save the world. Matt doesn't know the other five and must "close" Raven's Gate on his own. As the second book, EVIL STAR, begins, Matt finds himself in Peru meeting up with Pedro, who turns out to be one of the chosen five. Matt and Pedro join forces, although it isn't easy since Matt speaks only English and Pedro speaks Spanish. Their unusual connection does allow them to communicate while in a dream state. They learn each others' stories and realize that their paths will someday cross the paths of their remaining team. Together Matt and Pedro must find and prevent the opening of the second gate. Its history is intertwined with the ancient Incas and the Peruvian culture. As they search the seamier side of Peru, they encounter kidnapping, gun battles, the evil "big headed" Salamanda, high altitude jungle treks, and terrifying helicopter rides. Exactly what is the Evil Star and can they find the next gate in time to close it and save the world from the Old Ones? Horowitz provides his usual fast-paced, non-stop action in this new series. It is sure to impress his already established fans and create plenty of new ones. Reviewed by: Sally Kruger, aka "Readingjunky"

This review is from: The Gatekeepers #2: Evil Star (Hardcover)
I thought this book was way better than Raven's Gate. The story just gets better and better.
This book is about Matt going to Peru because the Nexus believes there is another gate and it's supposed to open soon. So Matt goes to Peru and as he's leaving the aiport, they get ambushed. Richard gets kiddnaped and Matt gets away. He then meets a boy named Pedro. Pedro takes him to a place called Poison town. Matt gets a whole new look because the cops are after him. He goes on a wild journey through town, through jungles. After they come out from the Cloud Forest, Matt meets the Incas, an ancient civilazation, and they beleive that Pedro is one of the five. They go to a labratory in a town because they think it will stop the gate from opening. They fight guards and then they find out the gate is still opening so they get sent all the way into a desert by a helecopter. The helecopter crashes and Pedro broke his ankle and he can't fight. Matt goes out alone and then he watches in horror as the Old Ones come out of the ground. Will the Matt win and save the world or will the king of the Old Ones detroy Matt and take over the world... I think this book is great for someone who likes actionbooks and people 10 or older.

Evil Star
Evil Star by Anthony Horowitz is an amazing, action packed and fun to read book that I would recommend to anyone of ages ten and up. The story starts in the English town York, where Matthew Freeman lives and goes to school. There he is asked by a secretive group to retrieve a diary. Along the way he ends up finding a dead man and loses the diary. After that he goes to Peru and meets a strange boy named Pedro. Pedro turns out to be very helpful and in a few situations he saves matt's life. Then, while trying to save matt's friend, Richard Cole, they uncover a mysterious plan made by Senior Salamanda to take over the world. But little does Salamanda know what he is messing with. Matt is an intelligent boy, he is tall and has short brown hair. In the beginning of the series he was just a normal teenager who got into a lot of trouble until the Leaf Project sent him away in the first book, Ravens Gate. In Evil Star he ends up lost and confused in the winding streets of Peru instead of a distant farm way out in the country. There, his car is attacked, his friend is kidnapped and the driver is shot. Then he finds Pedro and Pedro takes Matt to the man he works for to get him help. To me, Matt seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time but somehow he manages to deal with it. You should read this book not because I am recommending it, but because it is a great series that you can really get into.

Evil Star - Anthony Horowitz,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Gatekeepers #2: Evil Star (Hardcover)
Evil Star is the best! It has loads of things happening, and they're all breathtaking! It's always left on a cliffhanger, cos you really want to know what happens next. The plot is really great, with the beginning, then strange things happen, and a part when there's a puzzle, and your really trying to solve it before you get to that part in the book. Every single page is filled with action and you'll never stop reading, it becomes addictive! The main character is probably Matt or Pedro. There is lots of action between them and it's just really great!

I picked up Raven's Gate and Evil Star as the same time. Evil Star is the second book in the GateKeepers series by Anthony Horowitz. I don't rate Horowitz as highly as my favorite author Robert Stanek but I do like his Alex Rider books. I have all the the Alex Rider books actually. Evil Star continues the story of 14 year old Matt Freeman. Since his parents were killed in a car accident, Matt lives with his aunt and he's always getting into trouble at home and at school. In the last story, Matt finally unravelled the mystery of the unnatural evil of Raven's Gate and he managed to close it. Matt discovers his fate and the fate of the world depends on him and four others (part of a group of five) who can stop the evil of the Old Ones. The first of the others Matt encounters is streetkid from Peru. This mystery will lead them to another gate.

This book was just as good as the first which means it was great! It continues around where Raven's Gate left off. Matt and Richard go to Peru to find the second gate where they are sperated. Matt meets Pedro ,another one of the five, and together the boys go out to find Richard and in the process discover that they are now enemies with one of the richest men in Peru. No matter where they go the boys are found and they soon discover that there may be a spy among them, and time is running out before the gate will open! Read this awsome book to find out the shocking secrets and startling conclusion.

This review is from: The Gatekeepers #2: Evil Star (Hardcover)
Evil star is a fast paced thriller, much better than the first (Raven's Gate).
I espeicaly like the way it grabs you from the beggining. Like the first book it contains violence, that may disturb some people. In this book, even though Matt is reluctant to help the ,he ends up going with them to Peru to find the second gate. When Richard is kidnapped Matt finds one of the five, a boy named Pedro with the help of Pedro,Matt tries to find and save Richard assuming a man named Salamanda was behind the kiddnapping (Salamanda is the one who is trying to open the gate). It turns out Matt's hunch was wrong. But when Matt does find Richard, Matt and Pedro also find an alliance they never thought existed. In the end Matt fails in his attempt to destroy the gate and even though Salamanca is gone the old ones still come out of the gate...

Evil on the move...,

This review is from: The Gatekeepers #2: Evil Star (Hardcover)
Matt Freeman is one of the five, who can save the world from the old ones with their series of special powers. His caretaker, Richard Cole, who he met in the first book in the series, Raven's Gate, sends him to a new school. The first day when he's in the lunchroom, the school bully aggravates him until he uses his powers. This ends his days at school.
He also meets another of the five, known to Matt as Pedro. Not much is known about this mysterious native to Peru, but as you read the book you find out more about the character's personality. Matt seems brief in describing what he's feeling in moments of peril or danger. The typical guy personality. We don't talk about feelings even if we really need to. If you as a reader want to really want to dig deep into the emotions of the main character you should try another book. This is a book I recommend for males of any age, especially if you like a sort of blend between sci-fi and mystery. The third book, Nightrise, will be coming out soon. - Breyon Ewing |
