Book Description

June 15, 2004
In The Gateless Gate, one of modern Zen Buddhism's uniquely influential masters offers classic commentaries on the Mumonkan, one of Zen's greatest collections of teaching stories. This translation was compiled with the Western reader in mind, and includes Koan Yamada's clear and penetrating comments on each case. Yamada played a seminal role in bringing Zen Buddhism to the West from Japan, going on to be the head of the Sanbo Kyodan Zen Community. The Gateless Gate would be invaluable if only for the translation and commentary alone, yet it's loaded with extra material and is a fantastic resource to keep close by:

This book includes an in-depth introduction to the History of Zen Practice, lineage charts, Japanese-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-Japanese conversion charts for personal names, place names, and names of writings, plus, front- and back-matter from ancient and modern figures: Mumon, Shuan, Kubota Ji'un, Taizan Maezumi, Hugo Enomiya-Lasalle, and Yamada Roshi's son, Masamichi Yamada. The Gateless Gate is a wonderful inspiration for the Zen practitioner, and for those with a general interest in Zen Buddhism.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift from a lifetime of practice and enlightenment!, June 7, 2008
By
This review is from: The Gateless Gate: The Classic Book of Zen Koans (Paperback)
The Gateless Gate (Mumonkan) is one of the most influential texts in the history of Zen Buddhism, and Koun Yamada lucidly guides us to its essential wisdom.

In the style of the classic masters, Koun Yamada presents a treasure trove of insight from his lifetime of practice and enlightenment.

His commentaries on the Mumonkan one open the way to the profound wisdom embodied in this peerless collection of koans, revealing one of the reasons that Koun Yamada was so influential in bringing Zen Buddhism to the West.

Also included is an introduction to the History of Zen Practice, lineage charts, Japanese-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-Japanese conversion charts for personal names, and names of writings, place names, and more.

This translation of the Gateless Gate is alone worth the price of the book-- add to that Yamada's profound commentary and the supplamental material and you will see the reason why this is a must own book for anyone interested in Zen.

5.0 out of 5 stars The modern classic, August 6, 2008

This review is from: The Gateless Gate: The Classic Book of Zen Koans (Paperback)
This is the classic set of koans with teisho written in a modern style. You will not have to struggle with arcane language and metaphors. Yamada explains the older metaphors fairly well as well. You can get to the meat of the matter rather than the semantics!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reflections on truth., September 12, 2009

This volume has an excellent set of historical observations about Zen and the commentaries on the "koans" are in progression as in any good law book. I feel this is the most outstanding edition available.
