5.0 out of 5 stars NO! IT'S NOT YES!, September 2, 2003

This review is from: Gates of Oblivion (Audio CD)
I don't mean to be glib with my review title but these guys do sound eerily like Yes on some songs. Actually, these guys sound like a combination of Rhapsody, Yes and Therion. If you haven't heard some of these groups, that means they sound good.

The first time I heard Epic Power Metal. I thought, I could really get into this if they would slow down just a little, especially on the faster songs. I was listening to the self proclaimed "Hollywood Metal" of Rhapsody.
The reason I thought this, was that Rhapsody along with Dragonforce and a couple other groups play the percussion at machine gun speed. In fact it was so fast I'm wondering if it was computerized because I don't see how anyone could move their arms and legs that fast

Then I discovered some other groups that played similar music but at a slightly slower pace that would allow my overtaxed mind to absorb and appreciate the music. Now, everyone knows that a lot of Power Metal bands are from Italy but most of the bands I found which played at a tempo that was appropriate for my taste were from various other countries. There was Sonata Arctica from Finland, Dragonland from Sweden, Freedom Call from Germany, Kamelot from (surprise)U.S.A. and last but certainly not least, Dark Moor from Spain

The Spanish melodic power metal band's third release The Gates of Oblivion captivates the listener from the first track. Each song is a masterpiece of epic power metal with the support of an orchestra and a couple choirs. Dark Moor continues to combine thrilling arrangements and grand melodies with the ingredients of classic heroic epic power metal.

This album is an invitation to loose ones self in the music, each song is a highlight, a new world that comes upon the listener. When the song "By the strange path of destiny" is opened by the unbelievably beautiful voice of Elisa C. Martin, you melt away. That's right the singer is a woman. I was surprised too, her voice could easily be a man. In fact she sounds a lot like Jon Anderson. The Gates of Oblivion is almost 56 minutes of top shelf melodic power metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Moor - Gates of Oblivion, November 26, 2004
This review is from: Gates of Oblivion (Audio CD)
OHMYGOD! This album is incredible. Any Metal fan out there who has not yet listened to this band is missing out. I know that many Metal fans cringe at the thought of symphonic elements in heavy music, but this really rocks! This is Symphonic Power Metal at its finest. Great band, brilliant album!

The Spanish melodic power metal band's latest release The Gates of Oblivion captivates the listener from the first track. Each song is a masterpiece of epic power metal. Dark Moor continues to combine thrilling arrangements and grand melodies with the ingredients of classic heroic epic power metal. I believe The Gates of Oblivion is one of the four best albums I have ever heard of this genre, the others being Hastings 1066 by Thy Majestie, Crystal Empire by Freedom Call and A Time Never Comes by Secret Spere. You may not have heard of any of these groups but trust me they are good.
Back to the cd at hand. This album is an invitation to loose oneself in the music, each song is a highlight, a new world that comes upon the listener. When the song "By the strange path of destiny" is opened by the unbelievably beautiful voice of Elisa Martin, you melt away. The Gates of Oblivion is almost 56 minutes of top shelf melodic power metal. Highly Reccomnded!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Moor has done it again!!!, May 21, 2002
This review is from: Gates of Oblivion (Audio CD)
After the agonizing wait between albums, Dark Moor has finally released their new masterpiece "The Gates of Oblivion." Their last release, the powerful "Hall of Olden Dreams" was a power-metal masterpiece, and I was skeptical about them topping it.
The Gates of Oblivion, however, surpasses all expectations. While there's no big progression from the last album, overall the songwriting is superior, with the songs just a bit faster and heavier than last time. The melodies are so catchy and infectious that they stay in your head long after the album is over. A must buy for fans of Epic metal. Other recommendations: Freedom Call - Eternity, and Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding power metal, April 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gates of Oblivion (Audio CD)
Dark Moor is seriously underrated. This CD is the follow-up to "In the Hall of the Olden Dreams", itself an absolutely stellar work. "Gates of Oblivion" is a bit more varied and is not as amazingly fast/complex/melodic as its predecessor, but if you like Olden Dreams you'll like this.

Almost no other band I've ever heard is as musically amazing as Dark Moor. They are each at the top of their craft as artists, and they merge their superlative musical skills into very fast, complex melodies with lots of intertwining harmonies, rhythmic counterpoint, and actual real, beautiful singing too - no growling/hacking here.

I like very fast, intense, complex, melodic music and Dark Moor delivers that. Their legendary/mythic themes only make it better.

Amazon, how about putting any Dark Moor on MP3 downloads?

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy crap!, June 20, 2003

Thisi album came out of nowhere and blew me away! I was already familiar with the more popular (stateside) powermetal bands like Guardian or Rhapsody, but this lesser-profile band is just as good as any of the big names! You can do no wrong with this album, everything is as it should be: epic songwriting, tight musicianship, and great production. There's not a whole lot to say; if you're familiar with power metal, you really need to get to know Dark Moor!
