Take your home multimedia studio to the next level with the nicely affordable Gateway GT4010 Media Center desktop PC. It comes loaded with the Windows XP Media Center 2005 operating system and multi-format/dual-layer 16x DVD burner (which can also burn your favorite music mixes to CD), enabling you to use this PC as your complete digital entertainment center. It has a large 200 GB hard drive and comes with 1 GB of RAM installed (2 GB max). Other features include AMD's 2.2 GHz Athlon 64 3500+ processor (which is ready for tomorrow's 64-bit software titles), an Nvidia GeForce 6100 video/graphics card with 128 MB of shared video memory, a wide variety of connectivity options (both USB 2.0 and FireWire), 8-channel surround sound capability, and Gateway's innovative BTC cooling technology.

The Basics

• Hard Drive: The 200 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is average in size compared to other media-centric desktop PCs. It provides a good size for a wide range of software applications and a generously sized digital audio library as well as room enough for editing digital home video.
  
• Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 3500+ processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. This 2.2 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MT/s (mega transfers per second) and 512 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.) It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Cool'n'Quiet Technology that conserves power while also keeping the PC nicely quiet.
  
• Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (400 MHz) is a good start right out of the box, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
  
• CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the GT4010's multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
  
• Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with a multimedia keyboard (PS/2) and a USB optical mouse with scroller wheel.

Screen, Graphics and Sound
Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 6100 video/graphics card (integrated into the Nvidia nForce 410 chipset). It offers up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also has an integrated audio card that provides 8-channel (7.1) high-definition surround sound audio.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the GT4010 has two PCI slots (one available), one PCI Express x1 slot (available), one PCI Express x16 slot (available), two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), and four 3.5-inch bays (two available). It comes with the following external connectors:

• 7 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 4 in rear)
• 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
• 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
• 1 serial port
• 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television and record and pause programs (much like a DVR--or digital video recorder--such as Tivo or ReplayTV). It's compatible with cable, digital cable, satellite TV and antenna inputs, and it includes an FM tuner.

It also comes preloaded with the following software titles: Microsoft Works, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Money 2005, Microsoft Encarta Online, CyberLink PowerDVD with 5.1-channel audio support, Nero 6 Suite, McAfee Internet Security Suite (with 90-day subscription), and Gateway BigFix.

BTX Technology
Balanced Technology Extended (BTX) is a more efficient desktop system design that was developed as a follow-up to the ATX form factor specification, the industry standard in chassis design since 1995. BTX Technology achieves a cooler environment within the computer using a patent-pending wind tunnel and improved two-fan cooling system. It employs two large fans, which spin slower and can move up to three times the airflow compared to standard ATX chassis designs, providing improved system-wide cooling. This effectively cools the processor, graphics adapter, memory and chipset, and ensures proper operation even in demanding configurations. This results in less dB noise than comparable configurations, making your PC run quieter and smoother.

Had this comp in house for around five years, in that span it has died 2 times. Its a common issue with this comp to have motherboard issues, and due to its unique proprietary design you cant just replace the board. I have been able to bring it back both times with different techniques such as heating the igp *intergrated graphics* Then replacing memory. This is an old system already if you happen on a good working one it is a nice system, very nice case with great room/cooling. However the board layout is bad and takes a lot of work. Good luck to anyone with one of these its on a 50/50 chance it will be bad.
