5.0 out of 5 stars Gateway, Yep, still in business
Gateway is still in business. Although now built by ACER the Gateway NV53 is quite a nice product. In the past I have owned 3 Gateway's which have all lasted a modest amount of time. After the ACER aquisition I never really thought to even look at a Gateway as I sure was unhappy with two ACER's I had ordered and sent back. While flipping through the TV channels the...

2.0 out of 5 stars Badly made. Screws fall out. DC jack weak.
I got this computer about 1 year ago and it's not a well built computer. It over heats a lot (to the point where if you touch it it burns) which makes it slow and my charging connector broke (which i found a lot of people with the same problem) and I had to repair it. When I was figuring out how to take it apart I found that about half of the screws were missing. When i...

While flipping through the TV channels the other day I came upon a "Today's Special" on HSN. It was this Gateway. I watched and watched and watched and boy did I listen to the host (who lied the entire time) and a Gateway rep. (also a liar). They just went on and on about the Blu-Ray player and the Hard Drive Space 320GB and 4Meg of Ram. They spoke of how no other Gateway was available with a Blu-Ray as HSN has bought them all out for this sale and how at $699 a special 800 number to India and $380 bucks worth of useless software this deal could not be made anywhere else. Just couldn't be. Afterall they had a the Blu-Ray drives and 3 interest free payments.
Not being one to trust a no nothing Host on HSN I began to scour the net to see what I could come up with. Not only did I find the Red Gateway that I wanted, it also had a 500GB Hard Drive and it had a superior processor to the one on HSN. It had the same Web Cam and the same everything except that wonderful software bundle. (cough, choke, hack, hack). And low and behold it was available on my AMAZON card for 12 months and no interest. How could this be? An Employee from Gateway and an HSN host both told the same story which was an out and out lie. I'm typing right this minute on my new Gateway that I bought from Amazon and received in 2 days, not 10. The computer is great. Full sized keyboard and a numeric key pad. A full motion touch pad, blu-ray, 500GB Hard Disk and 4mg of Ram all here and working beautifully. Acer aside, this machine still has a nice feel to it and is put together very well. From the Gateway Emblem to the Vision M500 Processor and HDMI port, this machine has just about everything you would want. I suggest you look at all the Gateway's available on AMAZON and at [...] as they are still building a solid, great looking product. Only draw back is that 800 number to India but I'm hoping to never use it. Most problems are created by the user and if you keep backups you can do all the repairs yourself. My vote, BUY A GATEWAY and buy it here at Amazon not at HSN.

Great product and well advanced above everything else. Wish it would have added bluetooth, That's the only thing missing. Very easy to set up and fast shipping. Cost is very compatible to other laptops with less on them.

Gateway went above and beyond when designing this laptop. Bluetooth, Blu-Ray player, 500 GB HD, 4 GB RAM and LED LCD screen. nothing out there gives you a laptop for this price. It was much better than i expected and it is beautifully designed. I'm loving it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Gateway NV53 rocks, May 17, 2010

I am very pleased with the performance of this notebook for this price. Win 7 64 bit and the AMD/ATI surly help, too. And this was the only notebook in this price range with Blue Ray and HDMI. 4 gig memeory and a 500 gig notebook are also very helpful...all under $700 delivered.

I used to be a Dell guy, but this Gateway has made me see some of the light.

My Best,

AustinEnigmatic

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Results, July 28, 2010

I purchased this Gateway laptop in early June as a refurbished unit. Shipment wasn't quick nor hideously long. However, track pad was broken upon first pulling it out of the box. What next ensues is a time consuming, aggravating, and endless run-around with Gateway customer service. Sent the computer in for repair TWICE (the first time it came back and the pad was STILL broken). I finally received the laptop back after a second return to the repair factory and so far (fingers crossed) everything is working correctly. I actually didn't get to use my new computer until mid-July.
I had shopped around a lot. This laptop contained a lot of features I specifically wanted. The model is great, screen quality beautiful. However, not so sure it was worth saving the 60-80 bucks to go refurbished.
P.S. a lot of people complain about the speaker quality for this model. I don't think it's terrible for a laptop (yes, it's a little tinny, aren't they all?). Headphone sound quality is phenomenal!

This netbook is AMAZING! Bough it for my man to use at school for notes and typing up documents. Web surfing is easy and fast! Great for travel. Don't really know a whole lot about connections or computers, but there's a "wizard" for everything. In a short summary "Great for Students," at least the ones who just need a notes netbook, as well as web surfing on the go =)

Multiple small problems, including a recalcitrant disc
drive, but the worst was the crash of hard drive. Not
a fun experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible BATTERY... Only 45 minutes after 1 year of simple used. jeje!!, August 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gateway NV5383u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Red) (Personal Computers)
When I bought this pc everything was fine, corresponded to those described by the manufacturer and Amazon. I gave 5 stars to boot. The problem was now, after a year of moderate use, personal, poor. And is that the battery is dying in less than an hour of using simple, normal. That for me has been a great Desilucion ... terrible! I'm even thinking about talking to manufacturers to see if we can better switch to another cell, which is more durable ... to work longer. Right now I drive 45 minutes ... That's too bad ... I have to go with her and drag to the electric cable everywhere, and that is not ideal for a good laptop. That's why I take away all the stars in this report. Sorry, I'm very sad ... to upset them all, the manufacturer and amazon.
