Book Description

Mad wizards wrenched open a gateway to hell on Eotrus land. A gateway that's determined to stay open.

What is the young knight, Claradon Eotrus, to do when he discovers that the man he recruited to help him close that gateway is either the greatest hero the world has ever known or the devil himself, thrown down from the heavens by the gods in olden days? Is he out to save Midgaard or destroy it? Does he serve the Norse gods: Odin, Thor, and the rest, or did he slay them? And if he's truly the harbinger of doom, how can Claradon stop him? How can he even survive him?

Claradon's Midgaard is a world filled of valiant knights, mysterious sorcerers, ruthless bounty hunters, complex political intrigues, monsters of myth and legend: the undead of this variety and that, gods and demons, and otherworldly evils so frightening you dare not read these books before sleep. But most of all, it's filled with stories that you will always remember, and characters that you will never forget.

Praise for Thater's Writing:
"Glenn Thater's, The Gateway, is a masterfully crafted epic fantasy about the ages old struggle between good and evil." -- Carol Marrs Phipps, author of Elf Killers.
"...as good as any fantasy tale you will read, it honors the tradition, and adds to our lore a story so good, so well told, I hope it will be remembered forever."  --- Rai Aren, co-author of Secret of the Sands.
"...a must read for all fans of classic sword and sorcery. A blend of howard, moorcock, wagner, with a twist of lovecraft. Well written and hugely entertaining." -- Jimmyonly (an Amazon reviewer)

From the Author

Floating at the surface of the Harbinger of Doom Saga stories are action, heroism, villainy, fantastical creatures, magic, and intrigue, obvious and entertaining to all those that skim its pages. But for those who delve deeper, these tales present truths both shocking and eternal. The nature of good and evil is explored in ways that led to the Saga's banning for either religious or political reasons in much of Western Europe for centuries. Ironically, a more careful reading of a wider swath of "Thetian" canon affirms the time-honored truths and values taught by the Church and upheld by the best of nations.
The Harbinger of Doom Saga presents a vast, complex world populated by a myriad of memorable characters, and beset with magic, monsters, mystery, myth, and mayhem. It is epic fantasy on its grandest scale. Dropping a reader somewhere amidst that maelstrom is a daunting prospect for author and reader alike. To ease the entrance, I begin the telling with the novella, The Gateway, which is decidedly not epic in scope but introduces some of the most beloved characters of the Saga, showcases Theta at his finest, and features the realistic, gritty action the Saga is known for, while also hinting at the wonders and mystery that define the ancient world of Midgaard. Fantasy readers may find it reminiscent in scope and feel to some of Robert E. Howard's stories of Conan, Kull, or Solomon Kane.

If you prefer to take a slightly more ambitious plunge into the Saga, I recommend that you begin with Gateway to Nifleheim, the full-length novel version (approximately 66,000 words, available in kindle and paperback) of the shorter work, The Gateway(approximately 25,000 words, also available in kindle and paperback). Subsequent volumes of the Saga expose the reader to the vast landscape of Midgaard as the Saga's reach spirals outward and becomes truly epic in scale and complexity.
As you take your first dip into the waters of Midgaard and experience the vivid descriptions of the landscape and the heart-thumping action, you may, as I do, feel the urge to pick up a sword and dive into the fray. Although we can't fight at Theta's side, take solace that we can revel in his exploits and follow him again and again as he strides across Midgaard in the days of high adventure.

I've done lots of things. I've gotten degrees and taken advanced courses in various fields: physics, engineering, religious studies, history. I've taught college courses, been a physicist, a licensed professional engineer, and I've investigated some of the most complex and high profile engineering disasters of the last twenty years. I've even testified as a forensic engineering expert before the supreme court of the State of New York. After reading the battle scenes in my books, some of my readers have asked me whether I also used to be a spy or a Special Forces operative. I can't comment on that, I tell them. My non-fiction work has been read around the world. I write some of that every day, and I still enjoy it. But all my life, for fun, I've written fantasy stories. I started writing them before I did any of the things I mentioned above, and I'll probably keep writing them for as long as I'm around. A few years ago, I decided to make a business out of it and get them published so others can read them too. I hope that you'll give my books a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and engaging March 17, 2013

Entertaining and engaging, Gateway to Nifleheim by Glenn G. Thater enthralls from the very beginning. I had read the novella version of this book, The Gateway, and was intrigued to see the release of the full-length version of the story and purchased it immediately. I am so glad I did! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action-filled fantasy/sorcery tales.
Monsters enter the Earth's realm through a mysterious portal, intent upon chaos, and set the stage for vividly described battles scenes so well written, the reader will feel as if s/he is fighting alongside the brave knights from House Eotrus.

5.0 out of 5 stars epic reading July 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
First, I was given a copy of this for review.

The book reads like Beowulf and other hero tales. The mainhero is named Theta, a mysterious hero type and whom says very little in the on going story.

The other hero, Gabriel is of the same as well. Both have little to say, but show the others how to win against extreme odds. The mix of magic, warriors and Daemons made the book well worth reading. This is well written and the style made it very easy for me to "see" the lands, knights and deeply enjoy the battle's.

There are 4 more books to this group, which I am looking forward to reading.

Five stars or more for a very exciting fantasy of the highest order. This book had a piece of everything you ever imagined in a world of knights, monsters, wizards and gore not necessary in that order. What a wonderful magical series this is going to be.

This story was an exceedingly incredible display of
advanced diction and grammar. The background for each
character was created with the obvious care of an
experienced writer. I loved it and only wish that it was longer.

I am 52 years old now and have not enjoyed a fantasy adventure story this much since I was a youth buried in D&D books in the late 70s and early 80s.
The Harbinger of Doom Series is a masterfully written story with Epic Heroic Battles, Adventure and great characters.
My favorite character - Lord Angle Theta - makes Conan look like a sissy boy ( and I love Conan)
Do yourself a favor and get this series now.

THE HARBINGER OF DOOM SAGA

The Harbinger of Doom saga centers around one Lord Angle Theta, an enigmatic warrior of unknown origins and mystical power. No mortal man is his match in battle. No sorcery can contain or confound him. No scholar or sage can outwit him. But for all his skills, he is but one of us; a man, a human, who shares our faults, our dreams, and our ambitions. He boldly strides across the land, fearless, peerless, and cloaked in mystery, all his will bent on righting such wrongs as he deems fit.
Until the day the Gateway opened and turned the world on its head. On that fateful day, Korrgonn came and washed away our dreams. And his outre realms of chaos set their unholy mark upon our world and claimed it for their own.
Only Theta and his companions see the enemies aligning against us. Only they foresee our end coming - the end of civilization, the end of the world of man. Only they can hope to turn the tide of madness and preserve all that we hold dear.
But no man, not even our greatest hero, can stand against the Lords of Chaos and the dark armies of Nifleheim at their command. Fiends that infiltrate unseen within our ranks, that tear down our temples and our traditions; that devour us from within, unseen, unknown, unheralded, and unopposed until the hour grows far too late.
Through the murk and mist that hangs before our eyes, one man only sees true. One man pierces the veil of magic that blinds us all and marks the world as it truly is, revealing secrets, secrets of Angle Theta, so horrifying as to shatter a man's mind and call into question the very nature of good and evil.
Join us now on our journey back to the days of high adventure.
