Hi I am a certified customer which means that I actually have the product right here. As a matter of fact I am using it right now as I write this review. It is a very reliable laptop, I have been using it for awhile now and as of yet I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I played Portal and Team Fortress 2 on the highest settings possible with absolutely smooth gameplay. The battery life does last up to 3 hours, which is extremely impressive for a laptop this size. It is a gaming laptop and that is where it delivers! The games play smoothly and the GTX 260m graphics card works very well, especially with the Windows 7 64-bit OS that maximizes the 4gigs of RAM it has onboard. It is a great laptop for the price! Only complaint I have with it is that it runs a little hot when using intense applications such as gaming, but it cools very, very fast after about ten minutes of leaving it idle with no applications running. Also, some people have complained that the screen is not quite full 1080p resolution but 720p looks good on this screen still. You can always opt to connect an HDMI cable to an HDTV or a monitor if you want full 1080p anyways. It's not as big or bulky as other 17 inch laptops and it works very well. Very stylish, fast, and well worth your money. I guarantee it. As a matter of fact, I promise you it's worth your money. Look at the other reviews other than on Amazon and you will see that they are all positive reviews!

I've had this laptop for about a year now. I bought it for the main purpose of being a gaming laptop and for extra storage since my pc was almost full. Everything I've ever run on it plays PERFECTLY on ultra high(Crysis, Oblivion, Starcraft II, Rift, etc)All the ports run solid and are located in convenient spots. The HDMI only adds to how great this is. very convenient to plug this in and watch movies/play games with such high quality. I've heard a few complaints about the weight of it (about 10 lbs) but it's honestly not bad. As long as you're not an infant, you should be able to handle it ;)I've also heard a few complaints about it heating up. To this I say; I've played games on this for about a months worth time on my lap(before I was able to get a desk for it) and I was very comfortable with it. The sound is clear enough for laptop speakers. I only used the speakers for a short while before I bought some separate speakers with a sub just for a little upgrade. The orange and black design is amazing. the orange led's for the power button and music pad are very stylish and convenient. I have yet to find a complaint about this. It was my first time getting a Gateway and I was skeptical, but now whenever I hear gateway, I think of a quality product.

I bought this lap when I took my Compaq to the Geek Squad for a check up. I just love it! I bought it at the recommendation of my sister who has been using Gateways for years. I have no idea why all the negative reviews but using this is a dream compared to the Compaq, it's easy to used and Windows 7 is a dream compared to Vista.

For the most part I love my Gateway FX edition laptop. It's fast smoothly operates with a large hard drive and powerful processor. it Even looks super cool! The only things I don't like is that, it's high gloss black plastic shows fingerprints very well. The manual wireless Wi-Fi switch, I just prefer to access the option in a program within the pc. The web cam is only 1.3 Mega pixels, I'm sure we have all seen better cameras on cheep cell phones. and the last thing is a eSATE port that holds no Purpose,I would have rather had another USB port in it's place. But it could just be me? who knows...but don't let this short list of thing stop you from getting this laptop it's a great pc for the money and you are getting it for less then I did a year go, about $300 less. (I some how feel like you owe me $300.00 Amazon!!!) I have only played a few games on this pc and the look and feel great and They also run smoothly. I have had this pc for about a year and I love it!

After my old computer conveniently crashed down about a week after the year Warranty ran out, I was in a mad dash to find a new one. I'm a gamer and love to play computer games, and media and all that fun stuff on my computer while also using it for a business. Of course any Laptop shopper would know those laptops get very verrry pricey. Running across this laptop was the best thing ever, and within my budget which was also a great plus!
With some extended insurance and a laptop rack to keep it from overheating I can safely say that I have not had any problems with this computer besides it blue screening on me once and I almost want to say that was my fault for loading too many things at once and it overheated. But it bounced back and I have been loving every minute, including writing this review, of my Gateway FX laptop! I highly recommend this product to anyone who's looking for a good performing laptop within a good pricing range. If your like me and don't have $3,000 to put down on a laptop (or build your own because those get pricey too) with great gaming features and awesome storage (i mean 500GB?? awesome!), then this is a great laptop. It does heat up, but think of all that's working inside of it...of course it's going to heat up! Buy one of the cooling pads or cooling racks, and some extended insurance and you can't go wrong with this package. Now my excitement woo-hoo is done for the day I shall leave any and all to their decisions haha!

No Support,

Bought my machine at the start of the semester so I had very little time to get up and running. Needed Linux as well as Windows, so I reformatted and installed duel boot, but games kept blowing up! Found out there were no recovery disks! You had to get them from this guy who seemed to be subcontracting from Gateway! Even with the recovery in place, the video was still messed up. Had to subscribe to a driver search service to locate them all. Games run for a little while and then the machine seizes and the hard drive starts making a grinding sound. The Gateway website has precisely "0" (zero) info on how to get support. To this day I don't have a clue how to call or email them. The warranty has a mailing address only.
So I had to use it as is. It runs, but the video is wacked. Dropped a grand of precious resources and spent weeks dinking with it when I should have been concentrating on my schoolwork. People complain about Asus and MSI's foreign call centers, but at least they answer the phone. For me Gateway has been a slow grinding hell. The semester is over, I'd like to fix this, but I have no idea how other than to buy a new laptop. I will remember Gateway and tell my friends about them forever.

My original review was a five star based on my experience with the older p7811FX model that was an exclusive at Best Buy. I've been very happy with the performance but I think the screen resolution for the newer versions is a corner they probably shouldn't have cut. It would probably be worth adding 150 or so to the price-point. To be fair I think the p7811fx was a marketing scheme to drum up popularity for the line and it was certainly priced at a steal, but the new resolution is a little low for a gaming laptop of this size.

I bought this laptop about a month ago. The specs seamed great, and they are. But this thing crashes over and over again. It's appeartlly some problem with the video drivers, I have downloaded the newest drivers (as of DEC 09) but it still happens all the time. Watching movies, playing games or even using inter explorer can do it; helll, even once when I changed the backgroud (its not the system I am writting this review with, lol). I would love for this thing to work right, if anyone can help me with advice to me problem, plz do.

Compromised Quality,
This review is from: Gateway P-7908u FX Edition 17-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 3 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
Bought this one new from Amazon. This laptop performs remarkably well for running high graphics video games, but the speakers are low quality and crackle even at medium volumes. There is also an issue where the display does not turn on, and takes a few attempts at restarting using the power button to get it to turn on; it does not CONSISTENTLY do this (happens two times out of every ten times turned on), which portrays that the manufacturers cheaped out and saved some money on parts that would not be detectable or defective enough for consumers to be able to use their flimsy warrantee. It does work, but it is both highly disappointing and annoying.
My 2 star rating reflects a warning to others who wish to spend a high amount money on a machine that is quality enough to be worth the four-digit funds spent for it. Absolutely ridiculous.

Good Price, Cheap Quality.,
This review is from: Gateway P-7908u FX Edition 17-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 3 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) (Personal Computers)
I bought this laptop on January 2010 and after 9 months of use the CD/DVD ROM drive failed, the 500GB Western Digital hard drive that came with it started having bad sectors until it died after 5 months of use.
Why do you think a Gaming laptop with high-end features like this one is cheap? Because they used low quality components to reduce the cost so you'll end up with a laptop with cheap components that will start failing after a couple of months of use. Another example is the performance. A friend of mine has a good quality laptop which has lower specs than this Gateway gaming laptop but his laptop shows better performance than this one. This laptop is also a dust and finger print magnet so you need to clean it every single day. As for support, the Gateway website do not update their drivers frequently and the support is almost non existent. I recently found that Acer now owns Gateway. Acer is known for building cheap quality laptops and after I heard that they bought Gateway it all made sense. Had I known this before hand I'd have spent an extra buck and bought a good quality laptop. |
