Performance: The computer is fast & snappy with the turbo-charged 2.1GHz (ramps up to 2.4GHz on demand) quad core processors. Nothing stalls, takes long or puts a heavy drain on system resources, it's all managed fairly intelligently. It even boots pretty quickly. However, don't let those numbers fool or confuse you. On the the site systemrequirementslab (Google it, Amazon won't allow links) I tested the computers ability to play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and the results were "Recommended: 2.4 GHz dual core or better. You Have: 2.1 GHz Performance Rated at: 4.73 GHz." For this price, that is outstanding.
GPU: Call of Duty was a good lead into this, it can clearly run the game with high settings. The recommended video RAM is 256MB, the integrated AMD Radeon HD 6530D puts out 1.8GB of video RAM. Also important to note is that this system supports AMD's crossfire, which allows you to mount ANOTHER video card into the system for dual graphics to monstrously boost performance. The only downside is that in order to do this you would have to the change the power supply unit since 2 cards would cause it to overheat. I've also tested DC Universe and Torchlight (similar to Diablo 3) and they run as expected on stock settings. I was looking for a game that I couldn't run and couldn't find any.. For games like Skyrim and Battlefield 3, you would meet the requirements though the settings would have to moderate since these games are very demanding. In short, you should be able to run just about anything on the integrated GPU alone.
Other thoughts: The included RAM leaves a little to be desired. 4GB's is decent but the CPU can house 16GB's worth, which is what I'm probably going to be upgrading to.Read more ›
I installed my two Hauppauge 2250 TV tuners (amazing that there was room for both in a small case), and it can record four HD (or analog) channels simultaneously and stream them to our Xbox and extenders without a hiccup.
Also bought the 24" Gateway LED Monitor here, and it's beautiful too.
Overall, a wonderfully powerful, yet small PC. Also, really like the keyboard and mouse. They're wired, but nice...very Apple/Sony-esque.
I bought 8 additional GB of RAM just to top off the allowable memory. I installed the additional memory and then plugged it in. It went through the usual install of Norton anti-virus and other bloatware. When the the bootup was finished I went to IE9 so that I could download AVG 64 bit, because I just don't like Norton. I was able to search on the sites with links to AVG using the preinstalled BING, which I also want to remove eventually. I found a link in the search listing for filehippo.com which I found to be a very reliable site to use for downloading software. I clicked on the link and the circle just kept twirling and twirling. No download ever occurred. I thought Norton was the problem with connecting to the link so I uninstalled Norton. I just couldn't get reliable connections to other sites, even amazon.com - go figure.
I first called my internet provider, Verizon DSL, because when I checked on the IP for my new Gateway desktop it gave 0.168.1.44. That seemed odd to me. (All of the other internal IPs for the multiple wired and wireless devices on my network all start with 192.) Anyway after 2 hours on the phone with Verizon (by the way, great customer support with exceptional patience), even installing Firefox because my Gateway came with IE9 which the Verizon tech thought might be part of the problem, still I could not connect to just any sites with either browser, especially when it was a site from which I might want to do a download.
I then called Gateway support and described all of the efforts I had previously attempted.Read more ›
I added 8GB later in the day to get 9.4GB of usable memory.
I realize that defective product can slip thru but there is no excuse for such poor customer support. I will never buy another Gateway product. Chuck
