Good value, has minor flaws,
By Alan O. "endospores" (Caracas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gateway T-1424u Laptop Computer (Personal Computers)
The laptop is great. It's nice visually and has decent performance, especially after you uninstall the norton 360 that comes preinstalled on it, it gets faster. It's everything you can hope for in a work laptop: it's light, has a nice finish, nice HDMI display, dvd-rw, a powerful athlon processor, 3gb of ram that allows you to run almost anything, ATI graphics that allow you to run some games and most imaging software (got adobe CS3 on it and it runs nicely).
However, Gateway messed up in a few areas. The battery, though 6-celled and 4400mah and yadda yadda yadda, barely gives you 2 and a half hours of life working like you normally would (no dvd) on a powersaving scheme. I've tried searching for a larger battery only to find there's no alternative, so get ready to be charging this laptop frequently. The thing that bothers me most is that the touchpad mouse sucks, big time. I've had many laptops in the past and even my 1995 inspiron's touchpad was better than this. It's not very sensitive, needs hard tapping to get the mouse moving/clicking and the surface isn't very smooth to scroll. Oh and the speakers suck. I don't use them much but i've had a few situations where i really needed the speakers to be loud and they're just not. Other than that, the computer's a great value for what you get and will serve you well if you don't mind the above points.

Not a 64-bit system or for Windows 7!,
This review is from: Gateway T-1424u Laptop Computer (Personal Computers)
The Gateway T-1424U is meant to be an affordable system with decent performance and high portability. Its specifications include 3GB of RAM, 320GB disk space, and a dual Althon 64-bit processor. The garnet-red color is a nice touch.
However, there are signs that Gateway has been cutting corners. The keyboard feels flimsy. No "physical" recovery media disks are provided with the system. On my notebook, the SD card reader "sticks" which must have been overlooked by their quality-control department. According to Gateway, this system is NOT meant to run a 64-bit OS (due to serious incompatibilities) and comes with only 32-bit Home Premium. Also, the RS690 chipset, being only DirectX 9.0 compatible (not 10.0), will NOT be able to effectively run Windows 7. Furthermore, this system is ineligible for the free Windows 7 upgrade. If you are purchasing with the intention of upgrading to Windows 7 or using 64-bit Vista, this system isn't for you. Lastly, I found Gateway's customer service & technical support to be extremely unhelpful in answering what should be simple questions regarding the system specifications. I hope this is not indicative of how they will handle warranty requests.
