3.0 out of 5 stars **Good Fodder for Starved Heechee Fans**, March 30, 2004
By
Vignettes is an accurate description of this work. There is no story flow, simply a collection of pages telling you mostly partial stories from Heechee Universe history. For those of us starved for additional Heechee lore, there is enough to stay interested and keep reading.

Unfortunately, there isn't enough to excite even an intense fan. During most segments of the book, just as we get to the critical point about a prospector's journey, or a revelation about the Heechee, Pohl moves on to another story. There is far less cohesion than in any other book he has written. Almost like he threw together his notes and called them a novel.

This book truly rates at 2.60 stars out of 5.00, rounded up to 3.00. The passing of these Golden-age ideas reveals that SF fans are starved for a new age of SF, the Platinum Age as I will call it. Let's hope modern writers can bring it on.
