Book Description

June 1, 1996

He was a legend of the Highlands, a masked rider no soldier could capture, her sworn enemy...her beloved.

Rachel de Lacey, the clever daughter of Lord General de Lacey, was about to embark on her own private war. She had been kidnapped in the midst of a British officer's ball and carried to the forest lair of the infamous Glen Lyon. Prepared to face the Scottish rebel who had become a legend, Rachel vowed she would defy him with her last breath. But when the blindfold was ripped from Rachel's eyes, she saw Gavin Carstares, earl of Glenlyon, for what he really was.

A strong yet gentle man, haunted by secrets, Gavin was the hero Rachel had always dreamed of. Now she became his pawn in a desperate game to save the women and children of Scotland from the slaughter waged by Sir Dunstan Wells -- Rachel's own fiancé. But in Gavin's battle he had never envisioned losing his heart -- and then breaking it when forced to give Rachel back to the man he hated most. As the heathered hills caught fire with their passion, Gavin and Rachel forged an everlasting bond that swept them toward an ecstasy worth defying a king's army....

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Outrage at war's savagery underlies the pages of Gather the Stars, giving a moral depth to Cates's (Stealing Heaven) splendid tale. Set in the aftermath of the 1746 battle of Culloden, the story centers around the arrogant Rachel de Lacey, daughter of a British general. She has vowed to wed the bravest man in England and, accordingly, is affianced to Sir Dunstan Wells, the "hero" who brutally decimated the Scottish troops of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Kidnapped by Dunstan's nemesis, the "Glen Lyon," Rachel gradually learns that true bravery lies not in killing and plunder but in gentleness and love. This finely crafted historical romance is a gem.

From Library Journal

Rachel de Lacey is kidnapped from a British officers' ball and taken to the lair of the feared Scottish rebel, Gavin Carstares, known as the Glen Lyon. He plans to use her as a bargaining chip to guarantee the safe passage of Scottish women and children by ship to America. Rachel, disillusioned with her well-connected fiance, finds that she is being held captive by the bravest man she has ever met. Tormented, gentle Gavin is a quintessential wounded hero with a spirited lady in Rachel, who helps him find a way to heal. Cates (Stealing Heaven, Pocket, 1995) delivers great reading with this one.?MKC

4.0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful KC book., March 17, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Gather the Stars (Mass Market Paperback)
If you've never read KC, start with The Raider, The Raider's Daughter and go down the line. They are really great and quite different from each other. When I started this book I wasn't sure I was going to like it. It's set in the post Culloden period and that's not my favorite era. But as you get into it, it grows on you. The characters are life like and likeable and their dedication to their cause is inspiring. One reviewer mentioned the lack of complexity in the development of the characters but I totally disagree. They had depth and multifaceted issues and longing. It was worth reading and now I'm on to the sequel about Gavin's brother Adam. (A cute twist the the hero's spectacles......which he often forgot or misplaced but then he forgot his gun once too!!) Cute dialogue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, June 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Gather the Stars (Mass Market Paperback)
Rarely do I fall in love with the hero within the first 50 pages but - Gavin! Wow!! Strong, gorgeous (with spectacles!), defender of children and human rights - what more could you want? And Rachel, who starts out like a hissing, spitting vixen, is transformed pretty quickly into a soft-hearted, likable heroine. The horrors of war were explicit but necessary to make Rachel see how the world really was. This book was magnificent - a definite keeper! I loved every second of it.

This book is the best I have ever read. I absolutely love the characters, especially Gavin Carstares. I love his personality and how he loves the orphans and his brother.
