A wonderful and heartfelt expression of the journey a parent unwillingly embarks upon when they lose an infant. I would recommend this for any parent who is coping with such a unique loss. I also believe that pastors, priests, deacons, grief counselors, grandparents and close friends would find this enormously helpful in understanding how to comfort and console these parents as well as celebrate the life of their child.

On an individual level, I can say that the emotions experienced and shared so openly by these women strongly resonates with me even six years after having had only 10 short days with my own little angel. It is uplifting to follow each of these women as they discover their inner strengths and individual paths after the loss of their child.

This is an excellent and moving book for anyone who has lost an infant or is close to someone who has lost an infant. It provides great insight into the grieving process as it pertains to infant loss. It is both touching and uplifting. It would also be very helpful for OB and NICU doctors and nurses, hospital chaplains, and anyone who works closely with those suffering from infant loss. Check out the Good Grief Group on Facebook and obtain more information about this book from the publisher at [...]

A Gathering of Angels is the work of Vicky Leland, RN, and five women she came to know in 2006, when each lost a premature baby. In her introduction, Leland writes of "angels" as good and special souls. Throughout her career as a neonatal intensive care unit nurse, Leland has sometimes befriended parents, but these five, she writes, "must have been angels to me." The opening chapters of A Gathering of Angels introduce the women, explain the supporting role of their husbands, and describe the first steps of the "Good Grief Group" book-writing project.

The book is presented in 22 themes consisting of comments by each of the moms and reflection questions for grieving parents and their family and friends. Additional sections feature letters from the mothers to their babies and a more detailed profile of all of the authors. Early themes focus on the period of intense, early grief and coping such as feeling robbed, betrayed, and guilty; emotional triggers; and communicating with family and friends. Later themes address faith and hope, the purpose of suffering, finding consolation and similar topics.

The faith theme paints a picture of all five mothers coming to their grief experience with at least a passive faith in God. Several had parents who were ministers and describe their background as Christian. Prayer was a staple for some during the days after their child's birth. In the immediate aftermath Linda said she made a deliberate choice to trust in God's plan for her life. Heather felt she no longer knew God, despite time spent scouring her bible for answers. Tania found the way to life and heaven, where she would reunite with Lanika, to be faith and trust in God.

Over time, all of the mothers settled in to a positive relationship with God.
