Do you believe in magic?,

You might, if you've heard the other four or five discs by CJP, and then put this one on. Always creditable, it seems to me that these guys have never, before now, that is, lived up to their potential. This is just a delightful disc, brimming with energy, focused playing, tricky rhythms effortlessly pulled off, and just a lot of musical spunk. Guest Paquito D'Rivera sounds as good as I've ever heard him--and that's quite a lot, including twice live. Maybe past CJP recordings had too many ch(i)efs--Andy Narell, Steve Khun--even Paquito, originally. Now, it's just Dave Samuels, an underrated vibesman in my opinion, and Dave Valentin, who finally seems to have found the right band, headlining with their best rhythm section ever. If you're a fan of jazz with a Latin accent, you won't want to miss out on this fine release.

One of the best jazz CDs in years,

I agree completely with the previous reviewer. From the opening beat, this CD will have you on your feet. It is full of energy and feeling, the kind of music that sounds fresh no matter how many times you hear it. One other point: This recording of CJP reminded me of early Return to Forever, which I have always loved. The percussion, in particular, had me looking for Airto's name on this CD. For those who like CJP and are no familiar with Return to Forever or Airto, they should check them out.

Caribbean Jazz Project was one of these unforgettable drive forces in which innovation of the blend of imported rhythms of Afro Latin tendency, Cuban influence, and Jazz. Dave Samuels and Dave Valentin were the protagonists of this successful idea that renewed and influenced directly the sound of Fat Burger, for instance, impregnating of fabulous taste of the kaleidoscopic possibilities of the Latin music.

From the very beginning this disc smokes in delightful flights of Latin jazz fancy. The opening track "Rendezvous" has a flavor reminiscent of the music created by Spyro Gyra Collection; the sax work is hot. The two Dave's(Samuel and Valentin)really team up and play well off of each other on many of the numbers creating a fresh, breezy sound that is upbeat with lots of energy. Each member gives way for solos in a true jazz manner that is bound together with Latin rhythms driven by pounding percussion. The reinterpretation of classic jazz songs like "Stolen Moments" keep true to the original song but seem to have even more bounce; again the two Dave's add another dimension to the song with their fine work on their individual solo's and counter play off of each other. Listening to this disc is like carnival. It is full of color and textures much like the tropical bird on the album cover. This is a great CD that is complete without any weekness; all of the songs are great. Recommended for Latin jazz aficionados.
