I admit, I am no big fan on DVD-Rs. But some I do have look really good and come from legit studios (Warner, Universal, Columbia, MGM/Fox) and even though this version of GATOR BAIT is a DVD-R from a little known company, they did justice for this long anticipated DVD debut. Don't be fooled by the cheap/cheesy cover. What is on the disc is what counts! The print is very clean and clear (the only blemish are the reel changes (cigarette burns in upper right) since this is taken from a film print) and its in its original full frame format. Does not need to be widescreen, works fine as is. Looks as if the two directors had a hand in this release because there is a cool interview with the two of them that I really liked. But we buy this for Claudia Jennings! And I have been waiting years for this to come out on DVD and replace the crappy unwatchable VHS videotape version. This is probably the best print of this little drive-in classic as we are going to get. And I am one picky viewer! Always demanding widescreen with full blown surround sound. But this title doesn't need all the tricks that we come to expect. This movie is good as is.
So don't be put off by it being a DVD-R and grab you a copy if you are a Claudia Jennings fan like me. Don't be scared it will look crappy, because its not. I was surprised how decent the image is!
Now if only TRUCK STOP WOMEN get a decent release (and widescreen in its Techniscope aspect ratio) we Claudia fans will be all set.

Well this sought after "hick flick" is finally on a legal DVD. This is one of those movies that's been impossible to find since the rental places cleared their early 80's VHS tapes off the shelves. It's one of those staples of early 80's late night cable some people remember... and seeing Claudia Jennings is always a good thing!

If you want an actual movie review, look elsewhere. But I figured someone should tell you what you're getting on the newly released DVD.

The DVD is released independently by the film's producers. The outer packaging looks like photoshop 101... from 1999, making it look like a $3.99 porn DVD. The movie print is good for an old drive-in flick. The picture is enhanced for 16 x 9 but definitely isn't a real widescreen presentation. Of course no one's watching this for cinematography study, but these kinds of things can be distracting to movie fans.

Extras include Spanish audio and a short "making of."

There's also "where are they now" segments on the makers of the film, the Sebastians. The wife uses hers to talk about her greyhound rescue group. The husband uses his to testify about his "born again" story and plug his religious website. He mentions that the reason he's finally putting his films out on DVD (at what is basically the end of the format's lifespan) is in hopes his religious website will reach viewers. Well... at least now we know why this stuff's been unavailable for 20 something years.

4 stars... mostly for being ably to cross this off my "will this ever show up on DVD" list and the fact that at $10 or less, they didn't price gouge.

Desiree (Claudia Jennings) lives in the swamp with her younger brother, sister, and a bad French accent applied to broken English. The law messes with her and she goes Rambette on them. Indeed, this appears to be a forerunner to "First Blood."

I obtained the director's special cut. I will say the transfer was superb considering the quality of film transfers from this era. However my memory seems to recall nude scenes that were deleted from this director's edition, especially those involving co-star Janit Baldwin. If I had to do again, I would go with the VHS.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs. rape, nudity (Janit Baldwin, Claudia Jennings)

Of all the films that the late Claudia Jennings made in the 70s, Gator Bait is the trashiest. It's about a gorgeous Cajun alligator poacher named Desire(Jennings), and her quest for vengeance on the redneck scum, who killed her younger sister.

Desire lives in a backwoods swamp area, presumably in Louisiana or thereabouts. She poaches alligators as a living, and takes care of her two younger siblings. The three are orphans, with no other family to depend on for sustenance.

One day when Desire is out poaching 'gators, she's ambushed by the local Sheriff's son, and his accomplice. The two attempt to rape Desire, and so she leads them on a merry boat chase through the swamp. They corner Desire, and she throws snakes that she caught into their boat. This allows Desire to escape their clutches. But the Sheriff's son accidentally kills his companion with a shotgun, when trying to shoot at the snakes in their boat.

The Sheriff's son blames Desire for the killing of his companion. So then his father, along with the father of the dead guy, launch an all-out hunt for Desire in the swamp. Along the way, another of the rednecks hunting for Desire, goes to her cabin to look for her. Desire's little sister is there, and she's brutally murdered by the redneck. From then on, Desire becomes the hunter rather than the hunted, as she's determined to make the rednecks pay for killing her sister.

Claudia Jennings is her usual voluptuous self in this film. Her hair and and make-up though, are too perfect for her role as a swamp-dwelling alligator poacher. Claudia did have the grace and athleticism, to handle the physically demanding role of Desire. The other actors, except for Janit Baldwin as Desire's sister, are dull and lifeless in their roles.
