5.0 out of 5 stars Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs - Gaucho Steely Dan Superb Sound, December 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Gaucho (Audio CD)
The attached is arguably the best CD Steely Dan completed prior to their breakup or since.

This is the Mobile Fidelity 24Karat Gold Version in the orignial shrink wrap.

A truly outstanding piece of jazz inflected rock/pop that is simply hard to beat if you are a fan. The sound is superb thanks to MFSL technology and remastering and ranks right up there with the Super Audio Version on the SACD Layer.

This item is a collectible and you may find it periodically on Ebay for significantly more money and in U.S. $'s.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, and in my opinion THE best, rock album ever, November 8, 1999
This review is from: GAUCHO (Audio CD)
Gaucho is a spectacular work. The musicianship is phenomenal, the melodies and arrangements are spellbinding -- almost heartbreakingly wonderful -- and the recording itself is rich, bright and a technical triumph. Steely Dan fans won't be disappointed by the lyrics, most of which are typically arcane. If you don't like it the first couple of times (I didn't!), keep playing it. You'll come around.

5.0 out of 5 stars The zenith of Steely Dan's star., October 31, 1999

"fortknots" (Warrenton, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: GAUCHO (Audio CD)
For those who thought it impossible, this CD is the cherry on top of Aja. Each cut is a tasty little world unto itself; each compelling in its own flavor; each tied to the rest by its pungent reflection of the times in which we live. The guitar in particular, both rhythm and solo, are so pristine (we're able to hear picks across strings especially well on Glamour Profession and My Rival) and well conceived as to be fascinating. None but Donald Fagen's voice would fit so perfectly. Gaucho is Steely Dan at its zenith. Sublime! This is the pop CD I'd put in a time capsule as a gift to future listeners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great!!! But,............, May 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: GAUCHO (Audio CD)
Don't get me wrong, this is a great Dan album, but unlike the excellent "Aja", this CD can drag a little (especially on Babylon Sisters). If you are new to the cult of Steely Dan, then purchase either "Pretzel Logic" or "Aja" first then get this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great seller "Paint it Gold CD's", August 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gaucho (Audio CD)
I bought the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Gold Ultradisc of Steely Dan's 'Gaucho' CD.

This version sounds incredible. And considering it is a re-master of the original master recording, there is no doubt as to why they just sound better than conventional store bought aluminum CD's.

5.0 out of 5 stars cutting edge classic steely dan, April 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: GAUCHO (Audio CD)
Having most of steely dan's collection, this album, that was supposedly thrown together in a protest to MCA, is a classic. (Donald) Fagen and (Walter) Becker REALLY outdid themselves on this effort....4 thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!sorry siskel & ebert

5.0 out of 5 stars They don't make em like this anymore, April 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: GAUCHO (Audio CD)
This is the greatest pop-jazz fusion album ever made. At first I thought that songs like "Glamour Profession" and "Hey, Nineteen" were too long and insipid. But after listening again (not just to the music but also the lyrics) they couldn't have been more perfect. The best cuts are "Gaucho"--which seems to be about irreconcilable differences between two friends (or lovers) concerning a "third party" and "Time Out of Mind"--which can be so playfully and wildly misinterpreted that it's beyond discussion at this point. Cryptic and ingenious with meticulously engineered songs. That's part of the Steely Dan charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time best pop culture classics, March 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: GAUCHO (Audio CD)
Goucho is the last and finest work of Steely Dan. This work encompasses all that which made SD the huge musical entity that they were. Goucho is truly a song-writing and lyrical masterpiece.

4.0 out of 5 stars The "Difficult" period of Steely Dan, March 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: GAUCHO (Audio CD)
Although recorded flawlessly, and with another top notch stable of rock and jazz musicians, the only flaw in this disc is that it failed to break new ground for Fagen and Becker. Also, conside the fact that it was their follow up to Aja. That is a tough act to follow.
