Review

“You are as close to Barcelona as you can be without going there.” (The Virginia Quarterly Review)

“The inventive paper constructions of Courtney Watson McCarthy bring these spectacular works to life in a new and fascinating way that enables us to further appreciate their genius.” (Architectural West)

About the Author

Courtney Watson McCarthy is a paper engineer and graphic designer. With a degree in theatrical scenic design, she has worked as a model builder and designer in a variety of fields before discovering the magic of movable books. From the time she dissected her first pop-up book, determined to solve the riddle of how it worked, she was hooked. After experimenting with cards and other small projects, she went on to design and engineer Eye Magic (Tango Books, 2010), M.C. Escher Pop-Ups (Thames & Hudson, 2011), New York Times acclaimed Gaudí Pop-Ups (Thames & Hudson, 2012), Pop-Up Numbers (Thames & Hudson, 2013) and Dalí Pop-Ups (Thames & Hudson, to be released 2014). She lives in the Hudson Valley with her husband and two daughters.

I love well-made pop-up books and when I saw this one on Gaudi, I had to have it. Regrettably it didn't wow me too much. Essentially all this is are photographs of some of Gaudi's work; these are folded so they pop up when one opens the book. Some are a bit more intricate than others in the way they are folded/put together, but several of these didn't open all the way, so all in all a bit underwhelming. I might return this. it is just not special enough...

I own a copy of Ms. McCarthy's previous pop-up book on M.C. Escher, so I was pleased to see the release of her new Gaudi book. I opened it with my seven-year-old daughter, who explored all the pop-ups and loved it as much as I did. She was fascinated by Gaudi's soft, curvy shapes; we both sat there entranced (and then giggling at one another) as we opened the page on the Sagrada Familia over and over, marveling at the way the steeple comes to life.

If you have an art or architecture lover on your holiday gift list, I highly recommend this book. It captures the beauty of Gaudi's creations in a novel way, and makes a lovely conversation piece. But try to refrain from wearing out the exquisite Sagrada Familia page by opening and closing it a thousand times. :-)

With all the possibilities this is a very disappointing book in terms of content and paper engineering. Gaudi's designs have so may 3-dimensional aspects and possible connection-to-Nature over-lays that are not utilized in this simplistic-photographic pop-up. Just because it's big and has a padded cover doesn't make up for the uninspiring content

"Absolutely amazing" is the only way to describe this giant pop-up celebrating the vision and work of Catalan architect and designer Antoni Gaudi. His visual influence on Barcelona is immeasurable. Those who have been fortunate enough to see his work there never forget it, especially the astounding Sagrada Familia. Bold, distinctive, dramatic, his designs have brought countless visitors to Barcelona and today his buildings are among the most admired in the world.

Born in 1852 to a humble family there was little in Gaudi's early life to indicate his greatness. In fact, when he graduated from the Barcelona Architure School the director said, "Who knows if we have given this diploma to a fool or to a genius. Time will tell." Time has definitely told and paper engineer Courtney Watson McCarthy has given life to some of Gaudi's most famous designs - words cannot do justice to these remarkable creations.

Included are 7 pop-ups and 16 illustrations, all in color. You'll find in addition to the unbelievable Sagrada Familia interior and exterior Ironwork from the Park Guell as well as the multi-colored Salamander also from the Park and more.

Almost a good as a trip to Barcelona Gaudi Pop-Ups is a joy to behold as well as paper engineering at its finest.

Highly recommended.

An interesting book with beautiful cut-outs; an excellent preview for a Barcelona visit. It's definitely a fine book for an adult to own as a reference to Gaudi's work - - and a pleasure to study.

This is a delightful coffee table book.

I delighted in Gaudi's work when I saw many in Barcelona.

This book is a wonderful reminder of his efforts. ...Read next sentence for a treat!

When I visited his home, I delighted seeing his daughter's dolls house. It was structured and filled with clearly Victorian furniture. There might be a story there, But I'm happy with my vacant smile at the notion. I'm satisfied with this because I fear reality would take the bloom off this rose.

Yes. my expectations were well met. But I must say that I am at a great diadvantage of never having seen Mr. Gaudi's
fantastic buildings in person therefore I believe my perspective may be slanted.
I have been aware of his works for a long time; and have seen pictures But I believe Ms. McCarthy's book lends us the
third -sided view which greatly enhances these works. So at 82 and my traveling days behind me I have the richness
of this book and am greatful.

The paper engineering in this book is pretty lackluster and adds little to the photographs. Architecture is an ideal subject for pop-up books, and Gaudi's work presents so many opportunities for a paper engineer that I really expected more. Some of the pages had merely a single table pop-up lifting part of the image above the page. I would love to see this revisited, perhaps as a deluxe version that is more developed.
