From Library Journal
This beautifully illustrated book is predominantly a biography interspersed with reproductions of Gaugin's paintings, drawings, sculptures, and ceramics. Photographs, many of them contemporary, and reproductions of other art works that influenced Gauguin's style and imagery accompany the illustrations of his work and add an extra dimension to the book. Regrettably, the commentary on the art is entirely too superficial, raising more questions than it answers. Although this is a step in the right direction, the definitive study of Gauguin's sources and the interrelation of his life and art remains to be written. Recommended for libraries needing additional books on this artist, especially since the photographic material is valuable. Lynell A. Morr, John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art Lib., Sarasota, Fla.
