Just over a decade into our future, America is a stricken country where
jobs are scarce, health care is a luxury for the wealthy, and hope rides
on the annual Gauntlet games--a punishing physical and mental
competition where the victor brings not only pride but an economic
windfall back to his or her home state.

 In the 2023 games,
former police detective turned paramedic Lara Evans represents Oregon.
But the contest's notorious obstacles and cutthroat rivalry may be the
least of her challenges. After saving a government bureaucrat's
life--and literally dodging a bullet--she finds herself in the
crosshairs of a relentless hit man. And when another Gauntlet contestant is murdered, a stroke of bad luck puts Lara on the wrong end of damning evidence.

Still, the games must go on. And with the country, the law, and a
killer watching her every move, Lara must use all her strength and savvy to beat the odds, claim the prize, and win back her life in the most dangerous game of all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly LJ Sellers' best book yet August 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I got hooked on LJ's books after reading the first Detective Jackson book, but this is possibly her best novel yet.

Former police detective Lara Evans is training to join a national competition called The Guantlet that is part reality show, part boot camp. The year is 2023. She's older and shorter than a lot of the die-hard competetors, and not exactly a favourite to win, but she's a compelling character you can't help but root for, both in the arena and out.

Then just as the contest gets into gear and Lara is carving out her place in the cut-throat media event of the year, a body is dumped at her feet (almost literally), and things take a sinister turn.

It's a fast-paced thriller I didn't want to put down. Sellers uses just the right balance of futuristic high-tech and gritty reality. I hope we see more Evans in the future. This series *must* go on!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good futuristic suspense November 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The year is 2023, gas is $8 a gallon, medical insurance is hard to come by, and unemployment is in the double digits. Not much has changed. For Lara Evans, a former police detective and now a paramedic in her home state of Oregon, it is time to leave for Washington, D.C. to compete in The Gauntlet, a set of physical and mental games that are grueling and difficult. The person who wins this competition takes home grant money and jobs are awarded to their state. Lara has trained for a couple of years and is in tip-top condition and wants to win.

Right before the day she leaves, she receives a call to go to a man's house where there is an injury. As she races there and gets out of her car, a man runs from the home, firing a gun at Lara. When Lara goes into the house, she finds a man on the floor with a gunshot wound to his upper arm. At the same time, there is another story line going on concerning a man named Paul Madsen, who has been asked by his boss to set up a personnel replacement database. The two stories will eventually become linked with an astounding conclusion.

Lara is very much a loner and avoids socializing, preferring her apartment and the gym and a quiet life outside of work. Paul Madsen is the same type of person, always alone except for his dog, but the difference is that Paul doesn't want to be alone. Paul isn't handsome, and in order to attract the attention of Camille, a beautiful woman with whom he works, he decides to have a nose job and other cosmetic surgery done. Where he gets the money is at the heart of much of the trouble in the story.

I very much enjoyed this book, and this is the first by L.J. Sellers I've read. I'm interested in reading the rest of her thrillers and mysteries. Recommended for mystery lovers and for readers who like thrillers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sellers Keeps Getting Better August 13, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
THE ARRANGER takes us to the future. But not too far. There are things everywhere we can identify, and acknowledge the potential of actually being in our future. Sellers builds a believable world using perfect detail, and she peoples that world with engrossing, well-developed characters.

Lara Evans, from the previous Detective Jackson novels, now has a story of her own, with the old gang peeking in for good measure. It's fun to have read the previous novels, but it isn't necessary. THE ARRANGER is a fabulous story and stands on its own.

This will be one that you'll not only find interesting, you'll find it engaging.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat predictable
I had really gotten into the Detective Jackson scene and this was way out there. It was well written as are all her books, but it was a far stretch for some of the action.

I honestly don't understand the 5 star reviews for this book. It's got a decent premise - if not original, as the Hunger Games, Running Man, etc., etc., etc. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Just ok
Not as good as some of her other books. Dislike how she jumps back and forth between two stories. Not near as fast paced or a page turner.
