5.0 out of 5 stars I Have Conquered the GAUNTLET., July 15, 2011

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gauntlet (Game Cartridge)
Gauntlet is an amazingly designed game that really makes the money worth it. After beating it with the Elf, I just find it difficult to downgrade to a slower moving character and attempt to beat it. So, the Elf is enough for me. Now, is it a really hard game to beat? I'll have to say no. It is a matter of testing which certain approaches work in each of the rooms and going and sticking with them. I am always looking for approaches that allow me to have most health points, keys, and bombs possible for the long run. That being said, I am going to give you tips and strategies in how to beat the game. However, the discussion is limited to rooms 79 to 100, the actual heart of the challenge of the game, because rooms 1 to 78 are quite nothing compared. Before I begin, I seriously recommend you to take all and full advantage of maps of each room on the internet and keeping them as a guide. Start with first 30 rooms from NES Maps, and then rest is found from strategywiki.org. Also, rely on youtube videos including three different routes: Wizard, Elf, and the Fastest TAS (most helpful of any). Whenever you are momentarily paralyzed by a trap panel, always push the start button and get back to the game. It will immediately release you and save you from being unnecessarily hit. Two of the most important tips I am going to give you now, and one is more important than the other. First, more important, always move fast from the start and get in the exit door in the shortest possible time, never stopping for a second, so you can take very little amount of possible hits from spawned enemies while still in its infancy. Do not bother with taking out the generators. It is not that important, and it is not worth the health points. Second, always try to use diagonal shots whenever possible and also convenient. Now, here are the tips for each room as I always took in my route from 79 to 100, and that is assuming you know the vault combination (if you know it already, you don't need to go to clue rooms; it doesn't harm you in the end since the knowledge of you not finding the clues isn't logged in the passwords as I initially suspected).
Room 79: Two separate routes here: First, I would be focusing on getting at 10 keys, 10 bombs, and a score of 1600 to unlock 1520 health points and making to first treasure room before exiting and getting a new password. Once this is accomplished, always use this password for the rest of the game. Each time your key/bomb supply/health points are increased but don't make it fully for all three, use the new password until you ultimately get them all accomplished and get the final password that you need. Second, the real route to room 100, I would bomb in the beginning and then just make a mad dash (no point for stopping to fight) for the exit at the bottom, grabbing all of the four items on each side. You will notice that the bomb supply will be back to 10.
Room 83: Treasure Room. Treasures aren't a priority anymore. Finding the real exit is. Always be moving fast to check all exits before you find it. Otherwise, game over for you. Remember, there is no single password that will put you in a room later than 79.
Room 84: Stay on the left side, hugging the wall to dead end and then move to right until dead end. Then, down to wall and right. Curve around each of the three corners and key yourself into upper middle room. Never try to touch a sorceress at any time. Use a fake on Death and then move deliberate and slow on your way to upper left corner room. My best is around 1425 health points prior to exit with an average of 1300s. Like I said, never stop and fight. Forget the items around, you don't need them at all. If you fall to room 85, game over. You need to restart.
Room 86: Notice that the room has generators alternating top and bottom and also left and right. What you should do is make a mad dash going around the generators, never touching them but occasionally shooting your way out of the grunts by your discretion. You need to get a feel for it. Don't ever stop until you get in the area where the Acid Puddles are at. By the time you get to the Acid Puddles, if your way in is temporarily blocked, see if you can get rid of the closest generator and any grunts around while you are waiting for the Acid Puddles to clear out of the way before you go in. When you get in, go to top right corner to get rid of all enemies everywhere including the grunts surrounding the exit through the diagonals. Finally, run for it to the exit. Never ever use the bomb in this room, it is absolutely unnecessary. Counting what I had from room 84, I've gotten out of 86 with at most 1000 health points, but usually around 500 to 800, depending on how tired my fingers are due to repeated Treasure Rooms.
Room 87: In gamefaqs, melvinwang said that "If you can pass the middle without using a bomb then you are a freakin' god at this game, or you're using a patch code." That is absolutely not true. Now, what you should do is: make a mad dash to the left, going around all the corners. Forget the generators, just fight your way out of the grunts; never stopping to do that on purpose but to run and shoot at same time. By the time you get out of the first challenge, get ready to get in the long corridor and start holding A to shoot off all of the ghosts, advancing your way until you are in the bigger corridor. Make sure to stay on the left side, hugging the wall. As soon as there are no more ghosts, blast your way in a single file all the way to the top. Forget about anything else. Forget the other generators. Never ever stop moving. By the time you make to the top, grab the keys and the black box before touching the exit. Absolutely no bombs are to be used in this room. At most, I've lost at most 200 to 300 health points constantly in this room. You should still have 10 keys and 10 bombs coming in room 88.
Room 88: Treasure Room. Treasures aren't a priority anymore. Finding the real exit is. Always be moving fast to check all exits before you find it. Otherwise, game over for you. Remember, there is no single password that will put you in a room later than 79.
Room 89: This is the easiest stretch of 79 to 100 in from rooms 89 to 92. Basically, shoot your way out until the key is used and keep going diagonally until the first locked chest is sighted by the wall. Get in for room 91.
Room 91: Another easy one. Combined two rooms, I've lost at most 10 health points. Zzzz. Test all of the four corners for the exit. So far, it is 9 keys and 10 bombs in possession.
Room 92: Treasure Room. Treasures aren't a priority anymore. Finding the real exit is. Always be moving fast to check all exits before you find it. Otherwise, game over for you unless your health points is nearly maximum. Remember, there is no single password that will put you in a room later than 79.
Room 93: This was the level that I struggled the most, trying to get the maximum health points possible before leaving. This is a really, really important level in terms of health points. Luckily, I found a way around, having at most 1300 health points. As soon as the room starts, make a mad dash to left, shooting your way out of the ghosts and hitting the trap panel. Press Start immediately. Unpause. Bomb your way out. Go down diagonally as fast as possible. Teleport to other side after shooting off the generator and stay low bottom to the wall and mad dash for the flashing panel. Grab the chest because a Potion is in it. You should have 10 Bombs now. Get out. Go up. Shoot off the two generators before you teleport to other room. Teleport and get the flashing panel before you test exit number 1. My way out of Room 93 is actually dependent on the fact that the first exit is real. However, if you touch both of the flashing panels before testing exit number 1, the first exit has a higher chance of being real. Usually, it should work. You could try to repeat the cycle until the first exit is real. Otherwise, get out and make a mad dash for the bottom, forgetting the generators and Grunts. Shoot your way out of the ghosts and generators to access the exit number 2. Like I said, between 1000 to 1300 health points is a victory. Don't ever stop moving except at the bottom for exit number 2. If you can't reach these numbers, keep trying until you perfect it.
Room 94: Mad dash yourself to right corner. Fight your way a bit through the Grunts and bomb everything in sight. Make sure to suffer minimal damage. Get yourself to left side of the big room after rounding around the top corner and set off another bomb. Pretty much you are in the clear to exit for room 99. 8 Bombs left now. At most, I probably lost 100 health points.
Room 99: As soon as the room starts, run to the bottom, make sure you don't get blocked by Death. Bomb as soon as you enter the bottom area. Get to left side. Bomb it again. Run straight up and make a mad dash until you see the Acid Puddle. Wait for it to clear a bit. Then, make a mad dash for the exit. You can bomb one more time at the upper left corner before the long corridor to the exit and then shoot off the generators and Grunts one at a time. My best coming into room 100 is 800 health points, more than enough. You should have 5 left now, more than enough.
Room 100: As soon as the room starts, move up and mad dash to left until wall corner. As soon as you get to there, bomb it. 4 bombs left. Go down and fight your way out until the very bottom. Bomb it. Grab the food and Potion also on right side. Still 4 Bombs left. Go back to where you were at before the Potion and work your way to top before meeting the dragon. Bomb the area again. 3 Bombs left. Finally, meet the dragon. Always work on one head at a time. Hit right head. Move to left side. Move back to right side to shoot more on the head before moving back to left. Keep doing it until the head dies. Do it the same for left head. Finally, the middle head remains. Step back a bit. Shoot at it. Go right side. Shoot at it diagonally. Move to left side and shoot at it diagonally. Repeat until the middle head dies. Bomb the area. 2 bombs left. Grab the two flashing panels. Go around left side of the dragon to find the last flashing panel by shooting at the rocks and also the red bottle in it. Bomb the area if needed. Finally, run for the orb and final exit of the game.
Good game. I really enjoyed it a lot. In fact, Gauntlet is thoroughly a better game than The Legend of Zelda. What a great game, and a very cool concept. The game lives up to its name: GAUNTLET.
