5.0 out of 5 stars You won't believe how good it is!
I am a born sceptic. I also have been obsessed with food for my entire adult life. When I am going to eat, what I am going to eat, where I am going to eat, if there will be enough food left by the time I get to the front of the line... Not a very nice way to live. This book HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! So far, everything she has said has been true. Everything that she...

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy read. Information you can find online.
I read this book after I jumped on the low-carb bandwagon and it was a good, personalized rehash of what you might read in any of the popular low-carb guides; cut the refined garbage and eat "real" food.

Carpender is a very readable author and I made it through the book in a couple of hours. Granted, I skimmed through much of what she wrote because I...

Everything that she said would happen, has happened. And it's not hard to do at all! Sure, the initial adjustment to serving a meal with no potatoes or bread is a little odd, but you get over it pretty fast. Somehow, this diet just clicked with me. After reading her book, I have at least 6 more reasons to eat this way than just to lose weight. That's not even my focus any more! She explained all the different approaches of all these other authors and shows you how to pick and choose which aspects of which approaches will work best for you. It's remarkably easy to read, too!

I used this book along with Lauri's Lo-Carb Cookbook and the Greg Smithey "Easy Toning" tape, and I lost 10 pounds the first week and, I don't know if my initial measurement was wrong or what, but I lost and INCH off my waist! I have ordered the rest of Mr. Smithey's "Easy" videos now, and use Lauri's cookbook everyday. I have not yet found a recipe I or my husband didn't like.

I hope you find something that works for you. But for my money, this was the best that was out there for me.

This review is from: How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds! (Paperback)
I spent two weeks reading this book over and over while practicing some of the principles and during that time I lost ten pounds! This book is entertaining, non technical and includes easy to understand summaries of all the popular low carb diets. I've read all the other books on this subject but this one is easily my favorite. Buy this book if you want the "skinny" on low carb diets!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, January 13, 2000
This review is from: How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds! (Paperback)
This is the best low carb diet book I have read. It covers the medical facts in an east to understand way and gives an outling to the major diets, and unlike Dr Atkins book you don't have to plow through hundreds of pages of goop to get to what you want to know, 'how do i do this and what can I eat' This is a read lady telling of real experiance and I hope I'm as successful as Dana at this way of Eating for life.

I bought this book after trying a few different diets to get off the weight I gained when I quit smoking. I really only wanted to lose about 30 lbs. and had accepted that after age 30 I would just be fatter than I was at 20. I was wrong. I lost 75 lbs. and have my high school body back at age 40. I could not be more ecstatic. My energy level has increased exponentially. I couldn't believe it. You can take information from the diets explained in this book and customize to your own needs. It is not difficult and I have never been starving on this diet like I have on every other diet. Giving up sugar is the hardest part for me, but I still indulge..just much less often. I started this diet about a year and half ago and have not gained any of the weight back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, August 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is one of the best comprehensive looks at low carb dieting that I have found. The discussions of the different approaches and sorting out the how and why of the various diets is enlightening. It is really helpful in developing an individual diet plan that is right for you and, most importantly, sustainable for long term weight loss. I am experiancing success and have a better idea of why this diet works for me. The information is presented in a clear and easy to understand manner that conveys confidence that her success can also be yours.

If your thinking about going low-carb, this is a book you must read before choosing a low-carbohydrate plan. Dana gives you the pros and cons on several of the top low-carb plans, and she does it in an easy to read format followed up with medical research documentation. Awesome book that is well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars non-scientifically speaking..., April 16, 2004
By A Customer
I recommend ANYONE on ANY sort of low-carb diet read this book. Another like this one you should also have, the first being "The Secret To Low Carb Success", by Laura Richard. Both books cover low-carbing non-scientifically, and go over the many low carb plans, adding advice from the author (a real everyday person) along the way. I don't choose one over the other. They are both that good. I haven't enjoyed reading so much in years. One of the many reasons I am applauding Dana's book is because she goes into detail about the "low carb" products and foods available to us, for example, starch blockers and meal bars. Just a great book to have, newcomer or professional low-carber alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even a carb eater can learn from this book., January 29, 2006

I am not a low-carb dieter, but I have been hypoglycemic since I was in high school. It's gotten more pronounced since the birth of my last child, and since I'm naturally busier with two kids, I found myself needing more and more snacks during the day to combat energy crashes, especially in the late afternoon. I came across Dana's book when I was doing some reading about lower carbohydrate eating, and in spite of the fact that I have no intention of ever giving up all my carbs, this book has realy helped me make much wiser food choices and helped me understand why refined carbs made me feel the way I did. It also underscored why it's important to feed my kids stuff besides refined carbs (which, fortunately, they already are used to; I never get complaints about whole wheat bread or brown rice). This book is very readable, easy to understand and full of sensible suggestions. I think it transcends the "faddishness" of low carb dieting, with its emphasis on real food rather than processed low-carb products, and that's what makes it relevant to folks like me and low-carb dieters alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book works for me!, February 6, 2000
By
Clarence G (Schaumburg, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds! (Paperback)
At age 40, I found myself overweight and vaguely concerned with my eating habits and nutritional ignorance. When I was unexpectedly confronted with high cholestrol and triglycerides scores I knew I had to do something but had no idea what. Fortunately I knew Dana Carpender through the internet. At that time she was writing this book. Under her guidance (I was a guinea pig, a lot of what she sent me appears word for word in the book) I have lost 25-30 pounds (starting approx. 240, now approx. 210) and held it for over 1 year. This works out to a little over 10% of total body weight which I saw somewhere was a good goal for most Americans to have. I feel great and have lots of energy. In addition, the cholesterol and triglyceride scores are much improved. While not following a strict low carb diet (I'm in her "Careful Carb-eater" category), I have drastically improved the quality of the carbs I do eat, thanks to her guidance. I am exercising more which helps but I think improved nutrition has been the key.

As someone else noted, Dana offers a range of dietary plans, explaining the pros and cons of each. She is realistic about the challenges that changing food habits present. Her explanations are well written in plain language, easy to understand, fun to read and encouraging to boot.

I'm looking forward to the cookbook she promised.
