Shawna MacGinnis, the head of the combined holdings of both the MacGinnis and Douglas clans at Castle MacGinnis in 19th-century Scotland, is tormented by memories of the supposed death of her lover, Laird David Douglas, five years before. In fact, David has returned from the Australian penal colony where he was shipped involuntarily; he wants answers and trusts nobody, including and especially Shawna, though he cannot deny his lifelong passion for her. Here several subplots are obviously continued from another book or will be continued. Drake (No Other Man, Avon, 1995), a pseudonym for Heather Graham, offers an overblown story that occasionally founders amid the twists and turns of an untamed plot. The resolution of the love between David and Shawna takes longer than necessary for a romance.-MKC
