Here are the answers you’ve been looking for! Gay and Lesbian Rights provides a complete guide and roadmap to GLBT rights. Whether you’re single, a couple or a family, you need to know how to use the legal system to get what you want. If you’re gay, lesbian, bi or TG, you need to know:

- your rights against discrimination at work, in housing and with regard to credit
- where to get help against discrimination
- how to create a domestic partnership in California or elsewhere
- how to use a domestic partnership form to get health benefits for your partner or yourself
- how to get a civil union in Vermont and who will perform one for you
- whether you can adopt or be a foster parent
- whether being GLBT is going to affect your divorce or custody case
- your protection under hate crime laws
- methods for legally changing your name or gender
- information for TGs and bis
- coping with transgender or transsexual issues in public and at work
- how to end a domestic partnership or civil union
- where to find GLBT resources, organizations and information
- how to use a surrogate, insemination or egg donor to become a parent
- ways to combine finances with a partner
- why you need to have a will
- whether your partner can adopt your children or vice versa
- how to use powers of attorney and other documents to give your partner rights

Gay and Lesbian Legal Rights uses clear language to explain how the law affects you and your loved ones, while emphasizing how to stand up for your rights, use the law to your advantage, find help and understand how to get the results you need under laws that aren’t always GLBT friendly. The book is written by an attorney and includes forms, a detailed resource appendix and a straight-forward, GLBT friendly tone.

Excellent state-by-state overview...comprehensive look at issues...clear, specific advice in non-legalese -- And Baby Magazine, Sept/Oct 2002

About the Author

Brette McWhorter Sember earned her JD from the State University of New York at Buffalo and practiced law before becoming a writer. Her general practice focused on individual’s and families’ rights and also included mediation. In her practice, Sember volunteered her time to provide community mediation services through the Better Business Bureau, represented children in family and matrimonial cases through the Law Guardian program and served as a volunteer attorney, accepting clients who could not afford legal services through the Volunteer Lawyers Project. Her contact with clients, as well as her experience in mediating problems, made it clear to her that there are many situations in which the law does not provide protection, assistance or clear answers for the real and important needs and problems people face. The GLBT community is one of those groups left out in the cold most of the time.

Recently, Sember worked closely with a GLBT phone book. Sember is the author of nine other Sphinx titles dealing with divorce, custody, visitation, credit, real estate and business. She is also the author of a children’s book and writes often about issues affecting parents, children and families.

This review is from: Gay and Lesbian Rights: A Guide for GLBT Singles, Couples and Families (Paperback)
This book is great and is something you've got to have to understand ways to protect yourself and your partner and kids if you have them. It is straightforward with lots of information. I thought it was very inclusive and practical. There's something in here for everyone - gay, bi, lesbian, TG, whatever.
