Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up?Timely and forthright, this volume offers a critical look at the issues confronting gays and lesbians in their search for equal rights under the law. Oliver begins with a brief history of homosexuality from ancient Greece to modern-day America and swiftly details early efforts against sexual discrimination, touching on Harry Hay's Mattachine Society, the publication of the Kinsey report, NYC's Stonewall Rebellion, and the murder of Harvey Milk. The book is further broken down by social categories of discrimination, all of which are illustrated with case laws and current statistics. Job bias, harassment in the schools, the battle for gay rights in the military, same-sex marriage prohibitions, and issues of fair health care and treatment are covered with both historical and contemporary examples. While the author is careful to include dissenting opinions to the arguments that would include sexual orientation as a protected category, the compelling examples of harassment and discrimination against gays lead readers to the inexorable conclusion that all American citizens deserve equal treatment under the law. Concise and well documented, this title provides a good introduction to a current and controversial issue.?Jennifer A. Fakolt, Denver Public Library
