Book Description

June 1, 2002

Based on media representations alone, you might think that the average age of American gay men is approximately 28. But the fact is, the gay population is aging at the same rate as the general population, with one in five over the age of 60. And while the heterosexual population is awash with representations of seniors, the gay population has virtually nothing in the way of older role models. John Lockhart provides a series of memorable snapshots of aging gay American men in these interviews crossing all regional, financial, and ethnic boundaries. The men reflect on a broad spectrum of issues: sex, spirituality, self-image, finances, health, and retirement living. A straightforward and practical book, The Gay Man's Guidet to Growing Older gives gay men a touchstone for planning their years as vital, productive, passionate seniors.

A visit to an 82-year-old friend he had not seen in 20 years sparked the idea for The Gay Man's Guidet to Growing Older , Lockhart's first book. Lockhart makes his home in San Diego, CA.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Any Gay Man Planning for His Future, January 9, 2006
This review is from: The Gay Man's Guide to Growing Older (Paperback)
"As Steve Hogan and Lee Hudson wrote in their book, Completely Queer: The Gay and Lesbian Encyclopedia, 'Aging remains one of the least discussed, least studied, and, probably as a result, least celebrated aspects of gay...lives.' Until now. In The Gay Man's Guide to Growing Older, John Lockhart has conducted in-depth interviews with more than 40 gay men over the age of 65, and he has compiled his findings in this practical, nonacademic book that details what life for 'gay men of certain age' is like. Topics covered include money, work, health care, relationships, sex, and more! This book is a must-read for any gay man planning for his future, regardless of his current age."--© zebraz
