Book Description

November 1, 1999
This revised and expanded edition covers all the AKC sighthound breeds, plus the coldbloods, staghounds, coyote hounds, lurchers, etc. From the farm fields of the Midwest through the wind-swept North Plains to the desert Southwest, join the author on hunts for jackrabbits, coyotes, fox, and cottontails with a variety of purebred and mixed-breed hounds. Meet some of the great old houndmen of the past and the legacy and lore they left behind. Learn the technique of the trailhound/sighthound combination hunt. Gazehounds & Coursing is provocative -- the author blasts the anti-hunters, insists on a strong conservation ethic, and says that some AKC breeds need an infusion of new blood to restore their working talents. Gazehounds & Coursing is evocative -- the author recounts great hounds he loved well who have crossed the great divide, and game animals he wishes in retrospect had gotten away. Above all, Gazehounds & Coursing is informative -- herein is the necessary methodology for choosing, raising, training, breeding, and running the lithe and graceful "longdogs."

Editorial Reviews

Review

We whose breath is taken by the sight of a pack of swift hounds sailing over the ground like unguided missiles should give a moment of thanks for the likes of M.H. Dutch Salmon. I suspect that most authors write more for the voice than the money, but I've never seen the trait more prominent than with the author of Gazehounds & Coursing. Dutch will write about the subjects that touch his passions, and never mind that the work is monumental, the audience small, and the pay smaller. Because of his passions, Gazehounds & Coursing is back in print, larger and more monumental than ever -- America's best and most complete representation of these ancient hounds of the hunt. -- Larry Mueller, Hunting Dogs Editor, Outdoor Life Magazine

More About the Author

M.H. Dutch Salmon is that author best known for having made a 200-mile wilderness canoe run down New Mexico's Gila River with a dog and a cat! This journey became the non-fiction narrative, "Gila Descending"(1986), now in it's fourth printing. His Southwest Trilogy, the last of which is the novel "Forty Freedoms"(2010), is also within the genre of outdoor sport and mans' relationship with the natural world. Salmon has a half-dozen hound dogs, too many fishing rods, and lives with his family near Silver City, New Mexico.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fills a real void in dog sport writing., June 4, 2000

This review is from: Gazehounds & Coursing - The History, Art and Sport of Hunting With Sighthounds (Hardcover)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mr. Salmon relates much needed information on a rather esoteric subject. The easy to read, anecdote-filled style brings the sport to life. This is not a dry "how-to" book, although it IS loaded with information and good advice. It is very hard to find information on field coursing, and I'm grateful to the author for taking the time to write this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The reality of what dogs are meant to do!, August 9, 2000

This review is from: Gazehounds & Coursing - The History, Art and Sport of Hunting With Sighthounds (Hardcover)
This is a great book for anyone that has a purebred dog of any type. Dutch Salmon drives home the point on why breeding for show ruins a breed of dog and the real art and science in maintaining a breed (or cross breed)is to breed for function and that form will follow. If you own a sighthound breed or cross, this book will encourage you to get out there with your companion and use him or her to there potential. There are alot of books on chasing a lure around and most devote a small chapter on hunting, which is what these dogs are (or were, sadly) meant to do!! Lots of info on most of the popular breeds and the game they chase and sometimes even catch. Best of all, it's full of stories of the authors experiences in the field that read like poetry. Well worth the money. I can't wait to read Dutch Salmon's other books. This book should be given to all the show dog people who still think that bench champ can still do all the things it's ancestors could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greyhound Book, March 20, 2010

A lot of history and pictires. I think every Greyhound owner should have this book. I learned about what makes a hound a certain type and appreciate that is also about how the different types interact with prey and why certain types are better after certain prey and certain terrain, etc.
