This is just the ticket an easily powers a 2T external Hard Drive so that videos etc can be accessed directly and sent via USB to a Nexus.

This is the perfect device to add powered USB ports for my Raspberry Pi without having to draw current from the Pi device itself.

The hub is a good hub. Please keep in mind that there are two versions of this hub. There is a powered version (5500ESP) and an un-powered (5500ES) version.

I bought the wrong one at first and I marked the product down one star for lacking clear identification. If it weren't for this labeling issue, I would have given 5 stars.

I intended to use this powered hub to charge 2 phones and a tablet when traveling. Unfortunately, the transformer output is only 1 amp. The USB 2.0 standard is 500 milliamps per port at 5 volts. That means that the hub would have to supply a minimum of 2 amps to properly power all 4 ports simultaneously.

Fortunately I have an older powered 4 port hub that has a transformer output of 2.6 amps -- a comfortable margin above the required 2 amps needed to power all 4 hubs.

The old hub had been attached to my laptop. I swapped it out & the new Gearhead unit in. It does work well as a USB 2.0 hub. I've tested the flash drive I have attached to it, as well as my 10 key pad. I also plugged in my phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) to verify that the laptop could read both the phone & the external micro SD card in the phone. Everything worked fine, and the phone showed that it was charging. However, given the 1 amp limit of the power supply, I would expect it to get quite warm since the 3 devices potentially consume 1.5 amps.

I like the size -- it would have been very convenient for travel, and the switch on the front would have been helpful, as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't have sufficient power for my needs when traveling. Fortunately for me I had a workable solution.

It's really perfect for hobby electronics. Never really needed more ports. A very easy choice for me. If I ever got another Pi for myself or anyone, I'll get this again.

I bought this mainly because it comes with the A/C adapter so I could power multiple USB ports if needed. After some use, I've noticed one of the ports is glitchy. It's the port furthest from the on/off switch. It seems to be a connection issue because anything I plug into it goes erratic (goes between connected and disconnected state erratically on my computer). So basically, it's just a 3port USB unit for me. Fortunately, I have only needed at most 3 ports. So, the product loses a star because of it. Overall, I'm still satisfied. The only other "minor" gripe is that the product is very light.. so without using the glue/sticky rubber pads, it just flip flops around easily.

Things I have, and whether or not this hub will power them. In all these test cases, each one was the only device plugged into the hub. All were plugged into the same USB port.

Buffalo USB bus-powered hard drive: No
Sandisk Cruzer Edge flash drive: No
PNY Attache 2-gig flash drive: No
PNY Attache 8-gig flash drive: Yes
Fan-equipped laptop stand: Yes
Annoying novelty toy of a dog that does sit-ups when you plug it into a USB port: Yes

LG Optimus V phone:
Will charge the phone if the hub is also connected to my laptop's USB port. Apparently not enough power to charge the phone on its own.
Cannot mount the phone's SD card when it's connected to the hub. It tries to, and one of the partitions briefly appeared on the desktop. I tried to copy a file from it; that failed, and my system reported the partition as corrupt. Once I connected the phone directly to a laptop USB port, all was fine.

I didn't expect this hub to be able to charge four iPads at the same time or anything, but I thought it'd at least power one external hard drive, or work as a functional USB phone connection device. Nope.

For all practical purposes, it's a twelve-dollar power switch for my laptop's cooling pad.

The hub is used to power the speakers and charge the phones. It is not really connected to the PC for acting as a hub. It has been working perfectly. The switch on the unit makes it even more useful to power on/off the connected devices.

I was happy to find one that has a power switch so it and the attached peripherals don't need to remain on all the time. Do note that it comes with a couple adhesive pads on the bottom.
