OVERALL, great ratchet.
My ratchet locked up on me too. Whenever i went to take off a bolt or tighten up a nut, the selector switch would catch "lock-up." The problem is an easy fix. Just take the snapring out,o-ring,metal cover, gear, pawl, itty bitty spring, selector switch, small o-ring, lastly another itty bitty spring. everything should be out now. Replace small o-ring with one that is a little fatter but same in diameter. give springs a little tug to strech'em just a little though" you will know cause the spaces between the coils become uneven=too much." Lube all moving parts with slight coat of automotive grease. Finally put back together, The ratchet should work like a champ now, with No locking up.

Bought this 1/2" drive ratchet back in 2006 and had NO trouble with it at all. The ratchet was stolen so I attempted to replace it with a 81306 ratchet [not the 81306F] because of bad reviews for 84 tooth ratchet. WELL it arrived quickly by shipper and was poorly packed [tool was coming out the end of box]. That was the first thing wrong. The tool was not the 60 tooth one but rather the newer 84 tooth one. That was the second thing wrong. The ratchet would not ratchet, would not move at all, frozen, but forward/reverse switch worked. That was the third thing wrong. I sent it back for a refund and they refunded my money the same day, long before they received the tool back. This was the third [in a row] defective Gearwrench tool I had to return in two weeks time...all different tools. I had very good luck with their tools in the past but not anymore. On Gearwrench's website they have "happy" testimonials up to 2009 but none newer then that. Was that when they switched from Taiwan to mainland China for their manufacturing????

I love this ratchet. It is exceptional. I replaced my Mac Flex Head with this. I have slowly been converting all of my Ratchets over to a fine tooth design. My Mac (VR18F) was a 30 tooth design and while it was a great tool, the coarse tooth ratchet was inhibiting my ability to get into tight spaces. This not only has an 84 tooth design for low arc, the head is also thinner and that helps as well. I have seen many reviewers talk about the lock up problem. When I bought my standard 1/2 drive ratchet, I went into a store and the ratchet they had on the shelf had this problem and it was obvious. So, I had them order me another one. The one they ordered was perfect and did not have this defect. This flex head that I bought from amazon did not have this problem either. From this, I would derive that Gearwrench had a run of bad stock with this defect, but it is being remedied as I have about 6 newer Gearwrench ratchets that work perfectly and do not have this obvious defect. With that said, I would not let that issue deter you from trying to get a screened good stock ratchet from gear wrench. They are great and the price is unbelievable. In the past, to get a tool with these kinds of engineered features like fine tooth and thin head, you would have to pay hundreds off the tool truck. I have plenty of snap on and mac tools that I bought for that reason. But now with Gearwrench, you can get these features at a reasonable price. It does make a difference when you are working on cars to really like the tools you are using. Regardless of brand name, I have a lot of older Mac and Snap On ratchets that I now consider worthless because the fine tooth technology was not around when I bought them in the early 90s, and I just don't want to use coarse tooth ratchets and ratcheting wrenches at all any more. I like Apex Tool Group stuff and continue to buy it when I need to replace tools, or create a new tool kit for one of our work benches or trucks.

The wrench seemed like a return item. I am having issues with the ratchet slipping out of the direction and locking up. I have to hold the switch in place so it does not lock up. The wrench also had several dings and blemishes when I received it. I use it so little that I can live with the problems. If I was a regular user of it I would have returned it.
