Gearwrench combines the speed of a ratchet with the access and control of a wrench with this 16-piece metric set of flex-head combination ratcheting wrenches (model 9902). The handy flex head tilts up to 180 degrees at any interval for excellent access to fasteners, and it has a spring washer design that provides continuous head tension. The serrated wrench beam allows you to feel which direction to pull.

They offer the easy of 5 degrees of movement to turn fasteners, versus 30 degrees on standard combination wrenches. The small ratcheting box end head design enables access to tight spots where a ratchet won't fit. The open end allows ratcheting of nuts and bolts without removing the wrench from the fastener, making jobs go faster and easier. This set comes with a wrench locker rack that holds the wrenches in place for easy transport and storage.

Wow. What a great set of wrenches. I was given a smaller set of the non-flex head version of these wrenches several years ago as a gift and have used them so much, I decided to buy this larger, flex-head version. These things really let you get into tight spaces (can you say 4th Gen 4runner upper rear shock mount?) that sockets won't go and get bolts/nuts off fast without having to constantly reposition the wrench. I find myself using these wrenches more and more in places where I normally would have used a ratchet and socket. They are very strong, I've used them to remove and tighten things where I've really had to put some torque the fastener and they've held up well. At first I was concerned about the flex part being the weak link and breaking or spreading, but I haven't had any issues. The only problem I had was using the 19mm once when loosening a lug-nut (I was too lazy to get out my impact gun) and the ratcheting mechanism got "confused" and wouldn't ratchet, but a quick smack on concrete floor fixed it. It got the lug nut off and I haven't had any more problems. I know I've used some of the smaller size wrenches to torque things waaaay more than they should be, and wrenches haven't missed a beat.
You do have to be a little careful when applying a lot of force to tighten/free a fastener to make sure that the head doesn't flex on you when you don't want it to or you may end up busting a knuckle (but hey, it hasn't been a productive weekend of wrench turning unless you have at least one bloody knuckle). There is a allen screw that serves as the flex pin that you can adjust to loosen/tighten the flex so you set it to what's comfortable for you.

I use these every day at work. The other tech in the shop has rigid Gearwrenches, so I decided to buy the flex heads and we could use each other's as needed. Be sure to check the prices on the 9901 and 9903 kits... as I write this, those 2 kits together are about $20 cheaper than this one, for all the same wrenches, plus you get the 12-spot holder that the smaller kit includes, for whatever that's worth to you.

The flex head comes in handy far more often than it gets in the way. Really, the only times it's a bother is either putting tons of torque on a fastener, or sometimes trying to start a small one in a tight space, when the head will let it pivot some. If you're busting off really tight bolts, you should break them loose with a regular wrench, anyway, otherwise the ratchet mechanism tends to bind up... or possibly break. YMMV, but if you have a tool truck account with a friendly tool guy, Snap-On or Matco are willing to warranty these wrenches. Not as fast as warrantying a Craftsman wrench at Sears, but probably faster than sending it off to Gearwrench for replacement.

The included holder is in fact not terrible, and has the upside that it's secure, and has a handle, in case you want to bring the whole rack to the job. The downside is that it's not as fast on the draw as a regular wrench rack, because the wrenches click into place. Still better than anything I've seen included with any other set. My only other gripe is that they don't seem to make a ratcheting 7mm in any version, which would be quite handy on those stupid 7mm fasteners GM loves to use in confined spaces.

Your not going to find a better deal or a product of this magnitude for the money you spend. This is great for the professional or amateur doing small projects. Every size you need is right there. Nothing worse then stripping out nuts because you have a cheap 7 piece set and you either a size to big or a size to small... This is a must for any garage.

What a great set of spanners as a gift! These where given as a present to a young man starting a life as an apprentice Mechanical fitter. Spanners have been used many times already. Who would have thought traditional ring and open end spanners spanners would become redundant with new technologies. I can remember buying a top quality set of spanners 34 years ago and being told by the master they will last your whole life! This is still true but I may never need them as the GearWrench set is so superior to any ring or open end spanner combination.
These spanners allow restrictive access bolts and nuts buried in a maze of components to be easily removed where a socket is to wide to gain access. The fine spline ratchet allows the smallest movement arc to get at the difficult fasterner and apply full pressure.
Would be good if a unique serial number was emobossed on them and numbers stored in a master data register so if they get pinched we get an opportunity to deal that issue.
