I got my Lancer two days ago. It's been a 36" bundle of disappointments, even though I knew what was coming.

I got my Lancer two days ago. It's been a 36" bundle of disappointments, even though I knew what was coming.

1. Appearance: While the blood is nicely applied, it does nothing for the look of the gun. All the right levers and triggers are there, but they do nothing. And despite claims to the contrary on the product's description, this is not the Lancer used in GOW2, but GOW1 (shorter barrel), which makes me wonder if it wasn't a delayed tie-in with the original game.

2. Functionality: Here is where this gun really falls on its face. For almost $150, this gun does ALMOST NOTHING. Heck, if you don't know how to wedge a piece of metal between the uppermost battery and the battery terminal (small coin, paper clip, bit of tinfoil, whatever works), it DOES do nothing. The chainsaw noise sounds like it came off of a $3 toy in the 80s, and the vibration is even less convincing. With the price tag on this joker, they could've at least included an assault rifle sound effect (they used the assault rifle trigger for the saw for some reason). Heck, for that price, they could've lit the blue lights all over the gun, as well as the sights, and made some of the levers move, even if they didn't do anything. As it is, this thing's a very big, very pretty motorized paperweight, however well the fake blood is applied.

Also, that's not weapons-grade plastic. That's thick, cheap toy plastic. Nice to see that NECA is willing to cut corners on their contracts. The plastic hindsight also is slightly cloudy and often badly scratched on the examples I've seen, another trademark of poor-quality plastic. Not that it matters, since this gun doesn't even make a 'bang-bang' noise.

The extractable magazine's ease of release varies by the gun. Due to the defectiveness of the battery compartment, I have seen several exchanges of this gun. Some of those magazines wouldn't come out without plenty of wiggling and shaking. For this price tag, that's beyond unacceptable. That's just plain ridiculous.

Even the folding handle for the chainsaw feels slipshod and loose, likely to break off with even the slightest pressure. That's even less acceptable than the magazines, since this puppy's pretty weighty in the hands. Hands off the merchandise, folks.

I hope the modding community comes up with some great stuff, just so this shoddy toy is worth something close to the price tag (love to see an assault rifle sound and some flashing LEDs, personally). If I weren't such a big fan of the game, I'd dump this thing in the mail to Amazon and demand my money back. There's something a little intoxicating about having my own Lancer, even a bad one, but it sure doesn't outweigh the cost!

Paid 139.99 for this and the game. Had to wedge a piece of aluminum foil in the battery terminal to get it to work. Have had problems with NECA collectibles before as they don't seem to be of the highest quality. I figured things changed since this was a major release and the price tag was steep. Quality control really dropped the ball on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars False Advertising!, November 12, 2008

I was eager to receive this product and knew I was paying a little extra just to add what I thought would be a cool collectible to my collection, but oh was I way off by paying what I did for this piece of junk. First of all, this was falsely advertised as being constructed with "weapons grade" plastic, because in reality, the plastic feels the same as my sons super soaker. Since I'm in the military and handle weapons frequently, I can guarantee that this is not made with quality heavy duty plastic. The lancer looks and feels like a toy, plus the poor paint application doesn't help at all. Top it off with paint rubs, and you have a good idea that NECA put together a poor product. The look and feel of this item is extremely disappointing that I almost forgot to mention that the gun doesn't even work unless you shove aluminum paper in the battery compartment. What a joke! Amazon's service is always top notch, but NECA should go out of business over this rip-off. 2 stars for at least making it look decent, but it should have cost much less and should have been described more accurately.

Not going to repeat what has already written and posted, but this "collectible" was a disapointment. My 14 year old son likes it, so I guess that's all that is important. It is about $100 overpriced for what you get.

2.0 out of 5 stars Such a wasted opportunity, November 11, 2008

Let me begin by saying that I am a very big fan of the Gears of War games, and own several of the action figures (of highly mixed quality) sold by NECA, the company that makes this Lancer replica. So in hindsight I suppose I should've seen it coming...

I got mine the day after receiving the game, and right off the bat it didn't work. The fix described did the trick, at least (I used a penny, which was pretty easy to get into place), but I've noticed from looking at other examples of the gun that there are a lot of blemishes, such as poorly aligned and glued parts. The biggest disappointment, however, is the fact that the item only has one true action feature, the rather unconvincing "chainsaw noise" and vibration (the handful of moving parts and the removable magazine are to be expected in a full-scale collectible of this size and price, at the very least). NECA could've added a sound and vibration effect for the assault rifle firing, and also lit the illuminated sights and body lights. They chose to do none of these things, a severe disappointment in a collectible that costs at least twice as much as the deluxe version of the game. Then again, what is really to be expected from a company whose action figure version of Baird cannot be posed in any manner that doesn't involve looking like he is in dire need of a bathroom?

Of lesser note, the model is of the original Lancer, not the GoW 2 Lancer. The second Lancer has a longer barrel that protrudes past the tip of the saw, whereas the original's barrel was just slightly shorter than the saw (See? Told you I was a GoW geek).

2.0 out of 5 stars GOW2 Lancer Falls Short, November 7, 2008
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gears of War 2 Amazon.com Exclusive Lancer (Accessory)
NECA fell short on this product. Getting the last "c" battery in was difficult (I used the edge of a butter knife to push the second battery back while I was putting in the third), and I'm scared to know how I'll get it out some day. Normally there is room to put the last battery in at an angle, but not with this product (design flaw). Forget the foil or paper clip, too much hassle, just put a dime between the positive battery terminal and the metal plate where it is supposed to contact but doesn't quite, using a dime was extremely easy as it's the right size and thin. Weapons grade plastic? Only if you live on a planet where they use toy grade plastic for weapons because the government doesn't care whether or not your weapon breaks and you get killed. be careful with the handles on this thing. No way this is anything close to as strong or dense as weapons grade. Buyer beware.

Got mine today. Same issue. Had to place a small piece of metal (ex. paper clip)in between battery and terminal since the plastic piece that holds the battery in place keeps the positive part of the battery from reaching the terminal. Works now.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels ripped off., November 12, 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gears of War 2 Amazon.com Exclusive Lancer (Accessory)
I got my first Lancer two days ago, and needless to say it didn't work. I filled out the return requisition and got a new one today, and it still didn't work, so I called Amazon's customer service and was given a phone number to an electrical contracting company.

Finding no help there, I searched for reviews here and found that I must be the 200th person to feel screwed by this purchase. First of all, while I'm not in the military, I do know guns very well and this is not weapons-grade plastic. Second, having to jam a penny in battery compartment to get it to work? No thank you. Finally, upon getting it to work, this sounds nothing like the chainsaw bayonet from Gears; it sounds like a very loud cellphone vibrating in a large plastic casing.

I understand how people can say "it's not meant to be played with, it's meant to collect" and so on, and while I did buy this to collect and display, I bought it because I liked the item description so much. I wouldn't have spent this much money for a cheap toy. How is anyone going to collect something that comes out of the box broken?
